Wong Yuens Store has been a landmark in Waiohinu, forever! It's easily spotted along Hwy 11 near mile marker 60 by the awesome, huge painted mural on one side of the store, depicting local life about 100 years ago. Recently featured in an edition of Big Island Living magazine, this store and its owner/manager Roy, are classic treasures of an era gone by. Somehow, Roy manages to stock this tiny store with everything you could hope to find: fresh dairy products, breads, soda, beer, wine, canned goods up the kazoo, luncheon meats, snack foods, cookies and dessert goodies, and then goes well beyond in stocking things you'd never expect, like hardware and household project items! I don't know what we locals will do if ever this prized little store closes; for us? it's a neighborhood gathering place AND our preferred grocery store.

This store/gas station has been around for over 60 years. In the 70s, it was a bustling place and a place to put gas before the long trek to Kona. Back then gas stations were limited. It was the last gas station for the next two hours drive. I remember running into the store while Mr. Wong Yuen put gas in our vehicle. They still put gas for you! Mrs. Wong Yuen would be at the register and greet me right away with a smile. I would always grab a bun with red beans and shrimp chips. They had a tab for my dad so I would run out without paying. Today it's a hole in the wall place. Things are expensive here because it cost so much to get things to these parts. Support our local mom and pop shops.

This place is a good find when driving from Kona. It's in the middle of nowhere, but they have some organic products ( very expensive) but like I said, they are in the middle of nowhere. If you get stuck like us, it's great. If you're prepared, save your money and bring food for the road trip.

The reason is the guy cashier is so rude and unwelcoming and I do not like the way he was with me and the way he talks either so uncalled for. Please hired new employees who are nicer and not have an attitude.
