I hate to leave a less than perfect review, but it was a really mixed bag with the instructors. The guy that was helping out my husband and 9 year old kid was awesome and kind and patient (in the photo), but one of the other instructors was incredibly rude, he called a couple of the kids he was teaching stupid in front of my husband (but out of their earshot) and his demeanor was completely unprofessional. There was a seal on the beach when we arrived. It looked dead and I asked him if they normally sleep so deeply or if we should let someone know and he just told me: "don't worry about it". Who talks to people that way? Take a moment to treat your customers like human beings with kindness instead of being a jerk. Totally unprofessional. I won't be paying for more lessons from this school out of fear of the possibility of getting this guy as an instructor.

Such an incredible experience with Poipu Beach Surf School! I reached out to Doug in advance about where I was stuck with my surfing and what I needed specific help with during a private lesson. Chris, my instructor, was timely and warm. We spent at least twenty minutes running through turning techniques before getting in the water which I really appreciated. He broke down steps in small pieces so I could easily integrate it once we were in the water. I saw huge improvement in dropping in and turning during the lesson and also in the following days on my own that I spent surfing in Poipu.Perhaps the most meaningful part was how Chris was able to seamlessly integrate things I was learning into more than just surfing, but philosophy in life. An area in surfing I was struggling with was how chaotic it feels to catch the wave- feeling so rushed. He was able to help me understand that you don't match the energy of the wave but take your time, relax your upper body and that it's subtle movements to turn. Then time slows down. It really did feel like that while catching some beautiful and memorable waves and it's hard not to walk away thinking I learned way more than just surfing techniques. So grateful. I highly recommend it and I hope to be back one day.

Micah is a great teacher! My husband just did his first surfing lesson and LOVED it. I'm definitely coming back next year to try it too!

Jimmy and Logan did a great job. All three of my kids were surfing in no time with a smile on their face. My kids, ages 10, 12, & 15 said this was the highlight of the trip.

Scheduled a private lesson for my 4 kids (ages 8-14). Kamu and Jimmy were awesome instructors. They very obviously know what they are doing, and have a lifetime of experience coupled with a great attitude. I loved that they wasted no time on minutiae. They spent nearly the entire lesson in the water just coaching the kids and actually getting them up on waves. They even let me tag along and offered up some much appreciated free advice. Phenomenal experience. Highly recommend. We'll be repeat customers for sure.

I've taken a few beginner surf lessons when I've come to Kauai and this has been the worst experience I ever had. Austin was our instructor and he barely spoke to us, and was not welcoming at all. There was no hands on training just a 3 minute video then they took us out to the water. Instead of taking us to the normal spot where the surf lessons take place, Austin decided to take us far out (about 300 yards), into the ocean where waves were crashing onto the reef and rocks that were sticking out. I'd like to say I'm a strong swimmer and am comfortable in the water, but as I was getting clobbered by waves and very close to sharp rocks I did not feel safe or reassured by him at all and ended swimming back before even attempting to catch a wave. Meanwhile other surf lessons were taking place at a safe distance and people were actually catching waves. It's advertised people ages 6-76 can do this lesson I would never take a 6 year old out with him. Absolutely ridiculous.

If you see the instructor looking like Christino Ronald(fatter version), run away, Now!The only instruction for the beginner is saying “just go for it”. Don’t waste time and your dollars here.

The shortened surf lesson itself was good. That is the strongest point of why to choose Poipu. The concern was the employee communication when we arrived. We came over an hour early for a 12 noon 90 min private lesson (confirmed on my email). The employee at the counter told us (and repeated) come back at 12.15 for your 12.30 lesson. I was confused but figured they knew the reason for the later time. I got a phone call from the owner at 12.10 asking where we were. The employee said it was a misunderstanding, but did not explain why she said this.We booked over to the location for a shortened lesson. No reason or apology was given and we were charged the full amount for a very short 1 on 1 lesson. It feels sad to not recommend them but this was a fault on their end. We took her at her word. Maybe that is standard practice. But an apology for the wrong info would have helped.

Our surf instructor Adam seemed distracted: he was consistently talking to and giving surfing feedback to 2 women nearby who were not part of the semi-private lesson.Business did not reply to 2 separate emails passing along feedback.

I took my first surf lesson with Poipu Beach Surf School (Nukumoi Surf Co.), and it was a great experience! The instructor, Adam, was knowledgeable, patient, and encouraging, making me feel confident in the water. I learned a ton from his expertise and the overall atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. We did a semi-private lesson which started with an intro video. We then drove to the surf spot and met Adam there. After walking the boards over, we had a 20ish min lesson on land then headed into the water. We caught a ton of waves over the ~1 h period and Adam gave us a ton of tips. After the lesson Adam also stayed another extra ~30 mins and have us even more tips regarding apps to inform you of when/where surfing will be good, alignment, and surf etiquette. I've been implementing his techniques into my own surf outings and the lesson is really paying off!I highly recommend Poipu Beach Surf School to anyone looking to learn surfing from an expert!

We had an awesome surf lesson with Adam. We had never gone surfing before and were both scared and intimidated but we were catching waves and having a blast. We felt very safe and can’t wait to go surfing again.
