“I did alot of research into what rental car company to use when in Kauai (there’s alot of scary reviews out there!). I’m so glad I chose Alamo. Overall the experience was great.
Picking up rental car from Alamo Lihue Airport:
Upon arrival at the airport after collecting bags, follow the signs to “rental car” and you end up on the median strip waiting for the shuttle bus. All the rental company shuttles will stop here. The free “Alamo/Enterprise” branded shuttle takes people directly to where the office is. Only a few minutes drive, but definitely don’t try walking it. There’s no pedestrian footpaths or gates etc. just roads that lead to it.
Our experience:
When we arrived, there weren’t any lines. We were first in line. The lady who served us was friendly and she checked if we wanted any extra add ons (CDW and Liability was included already but we added roadside assistance). She also checked our drivers licenses and signed the rental contract. We then took this paperwork to a lady outside who then advised us which cars we could pick from. There’s lines of cars grouped into classes. We booked a compact but there weren’t any. So we ended up with a mid sized car. There’s plenty of cars to choose from. I suggest you walk over and check which one is the best condition. Takes lots of photos/videos to cover yourself. The key was in ignition. After picking the car, we then drove it to the exit where a boomgate is. A lady asked us if we are happy with the condition of the car, if we have Qs and if we have taken our photos/videos. When we said yes, we could leave.
The car was great. It worked as it should. It was clean. It had a full tank of fuel. We filled it ourselves before returning it. We kept the receipt but weren’t asked to show it.
For the return, we just followed the “rental car return” signs and then “alamo” and we drove and parked in these bays behind other returned cars. A lady then checked the car over. And she then let us know the charge would be processed. I then got an email confirming that the charge was processed and I don’t owe money. We then took the free Alamo/Enterprise shuttle bus back to the airport terminal.
Honestly such an easy process! I was kinda expecting something to go wrong or be difficult, but nothing did thankfully.
FYI: Any Australians reading this, you don’t actually need an international drivers license if you hire a car with Alamo. Unsure if you would need one if the Police pulled you over. But apparently in Hawaii one isn’t required if your license is in English.”

“In a world of mass consolidated everything, big car companies and airlines are no exception. Yet, I’m typically able to find an Enterprise anywhere with the same level of service. In fact, the employees seem to legitimately like their jobs. After dealing with this company for several years in various countries I am completely satisfied. I thought customer service was a legend until I discovered Enterprise. I tried to purchase their stock, but they are family owned and not public. Nevertheless, thank you for being the one big company that provides the service customers are entitled to. Congrats on doing the right things, simply because it is the right thing to do.”

“I am glad I used this local Kauai business! It was only $100 for a 3 day rental, the car was clean with a full tank of gas and the owners of this car rental pleasant to work with! Their lot was not too hard to find, although not right at the airport, it was close enough.”

“In the same building as the budget car rental location. The same shuttle bus. The airport doesn't have a sign that says 'payless' bus pickup, but its the same as the budget bus. It was easy to book a car online, they have a decent inventory, obviously if you are going for a place that is called 'payless' you aren't going to find many luxury options but you will find cheap economy cars to get you around. Pickup was a bit slow, because only 1 person working the counter, drop off was quick though. All in all, it was an easy experience and a quick way to get a car on the island.”
“This has been the easiest car rental experience of my life (both here and at Hertz Maui). Got the car within 15 mins, drop off took literally 2 minutes. Yeah the cars are scuffed up a bit, but who cares - you’re on Kauai, presumably driving the thing into Waimea Canyon and whatnot, of course they’ll get scratches. And reversely no one bat an eye about any small scratches you might have added in return - none of the tedious stalking around the vehicle to inspect the smallest dent. We were super content with the cars and service in both locations.”
“Thanks for the good service. At arrival, I waited for about 15-20 minutes for the agents to handle 4 customers in front of me, which I think is a little long. But otherwise everything was fine. Nice personnel, especially the gentleman at the front door (welcoming the customers who get off the shuttle) who helped us a lot with our concerns and questions.”

“I certainly don't know what people here are whining about. Had a very positive experience, especially in Kona, but also here. Reasonably fast processing at pickup and super-fast at return. There were folks in a queue at pickup and I had to wait for 15 minutes, so what. Got exactly the car I booked for, was in good shape and clean. Shuttle driver was friendly, even though he was clearly overworked. Value for money is great and they are open until very late, which was also really helpful for us. All in all, great experience. Give the guys a break, you're not paying Avis prices, are you, this is a discount car rental.”

“They worked with us as on a great deal for two minivans for our huge family vacation. We did not expect brand new vans (set your expectations) but they worked great and the AC worked well!!! The convenience of the car waiting for us in the parking lot as opposed to waiting 2 hours at the other rentals (even if you book ahead of time) was just GOLD!
