“Nestled amidst the lush windward landscape, the Byodo-In Temple stands as an oasis, a replica of the 950-year-old Byodoin Temple in Uji, Japan. Yet, unlike the quietude of its ancient counterpart, this temple hums with the energy of its numerous visitors. As I walked through the verdant gardens, the air was vibrant with the mingling scents of tropical flowers and the earthy musk of the pond's koi and black swan. The fiery red of the temple's intricate structure reflected in the calm pond, the golden hues of the Buddha statue casting a warm glow, and the verdant green of the trees whispering stories of old. However, tranquility was often overpowered by the cacophony of the crowd. The temple bell, intended for a soft call to mindfulness, rang out with a fervor that bordered on the theatrical, as if announcing the start of a circus show. It's a jarring contrast to the intended peace, transforming what should be a meditative experience into a spectacle of sorts.Despite the din, there were moments of serenity to be found. In a quiet corner, omikuji fortunes fluttered in the wind, tied to the branches of a sacred tree, their silent prayers undisturbed. A cat basked in a patch of sunlight, a living embodiment of contentment amidst the chaos. In these pockets of calm, the true spirit of Byodo-In could be felt. It's a place that beckons the soul to seek stillness, even when the world around is anything but. And so, my review is twofold: come for the beauty, the culture, and the history, but be prepared for the crowds that turn solitude to spectacle.”

“I have been to many many churches in my life and this one takes the cake. Solely for the people. The Aloha spirit it real. I am from NC and never felt a community that was so open and seeking of opportunities to fellowship. This church has the most ministries of any church I have been to. From drama to golf to creative design and cinematography. I am currently volunteering on their “Creative Ministry” and I get to work with subject matter experts on recording, storyboarding, directing, editing, and so much more. God has His hand on this church and is reviving peoples hope and passion for Christ! Come to New Hope Oahu and be sure to tell them that you are new so they can greet you with a lei and (possibly) even a bento breakfast! Hope is Alive, and God Bless!”

“My husband and I are both active duty and were looking for a doula for the birth of second son. We’d read a dozen books, attended birth courses, joined birth groups, etc. We reached out to Katja at Best Birth Hawaii. We really vibed with Erin and were stoked she was available to help us bring him into this world. She lived in the same area of the island and had a great perspective on birth. A lot of people asked why we would pay to have a doula and many more had questions on what they do. I’ll say this, at the end of the day we would have paid double! Erin is a badass and the best person to have in your corner whether you’re having a home or hospital birth. She helped us progress labor at home, came with a bag of tricks when she arrived at our home, coached us once we got to the hospital, advocated for us once there, played defense on an OB who was hoping to knock out a C-section, and even took some pictures since we couldn’t have a photographer (COVID restrictions). She’s strong, confident, experienced, professional, and knowledgeable. Mahalo Katja for having a great resource for birthing women and mahalo nui loa Erin for being part of our birth story!”

“Incredible historical church made of coral blocks. I finally had a chance to visit for an event. The inside in remarkably plain (which I didn't expect because after all it's a church). There is no air conditioning so beware if you're sensitive to heat or have a long event to attend. Parking is nearby along the street & can be a challenge to find. I suggest parking at the municipal lot across the street. Restrooms are in a trailer in the back of the courtyard, near the mission houses. It's worth a visit to see if you get the chance! The cemetery behind the church has been closed every time I go, but was open for the event. However, King Lunalilo's tomb was not. I wish there was more signage around to discuss the history.”

“As a guest attendee at a local member’s memorial service, the church’s Pastor Wayne and his crew were excellent. Church members were also warm and inviting. The ornate Japanese castle based building design was a thrill to tour. Definitely worth doing when you catch the regular Sunday service.”
