We make a point of getting shuck your own pearls wherever we travel as it is a tradition of ours. We have been to 3 different Pearl Factory locations and all of them have been a true joy with the Kona location being our favorite. They never pressure you to mount your pearls in jewelry, which is common for other shuck your own Pearl companies. The staff have always been pleasant to deal with and they do a great job in telling you how to care for your pearls and what the different colors mean. Absolutely love these folks!

Decent place to get pearls and accessories. The price of gold they sell is on the high end while the quality is fair. As adults, you should be able to say no when they try their gimmicky sales tactics after opening your pearl. They will use all sales techniques, so just be aware and make the best choice for yourself and budget. The items they sale are island themed so that was nice. Again, the price is high for the amount of gold they sale. There are no silver options. Don't let them pierce the Pearl unless you made your final choice.

I had been looking for a place to get a thank you present for a family friend. I had arrived at this location after searching for a decent place to get a very meaningful gift 30 min before they closed and about 2 hours before my flight. I was well taken care of, shown the greatest understanding for time, and the associate made suggestions that fit my needs. I was looking for a gift that had meaning, it was elegant, and lastly authentic. I was so satisfied with the gift I selected, I ended up buying a necklace for myself. Thank you Pearl Factory in Kona for everything

My husband and I were so pleasantly surprised with what a fabulously organic experience out pearl treasure hunting brought. Malia was so sweet and brought the perfect amount of Hawaiian spirit to the process. I absolutely love all of the settings she helped us create, when we come back on our next adventure to the island, we will certainly be adding to our collection with this company. Aloha and mahalo!

Beware, they are extremely salesy once you open a pearl oyster. The oyster opening costs $17+ but once you open, they force you to buy a jewelry adding $100s+.And I am not even sure if the "gold" we got sold is even real. It's embarrassing to say no once you open an oyster and you don't even know the price of the jewelry they attach it on to.Suggestion: Make sure to stand your ground and say no after you open an oyster to save your hard earned $$.

My husband and I stopped by at the beginning of our vacation just to browse. The saleswoman took the time to speak to us regarding the whole process of creating your own piece. We left because I was hesitant on the whole process. We came back before we left to go home and decided to pick an oyster and create a piece. We needed up getting two necklaces made. The saleswoman made the whole process seamless and was very friendly and knowledgeable.

These saleswomen are sharks! They are really amazing, and I'm genuinely impressed. I'm giving three stars because I felt like I was baited, and there was a lot of pressure being applied to drop $1,000 on a $17 pearl when I just opened an oyster for fun. After some time, I was finally given the option to buy a $50 cage pendant for it. Unfortunately, I found a cage pendant that looks exactly like it on etsy for $10.

Really wanted to buy a large sized pair of pearl studs. However the counter on both sides were being monopolized by two sets of customers. We waited for half an hour with no acknowledgement or movement. So we had to move on.

A jeweler that specializes in pearls (obvs), and they do have some wonderful merchandise here, from simple, relatively inexpensive accessories, to full-blown pearl necklaces running upward of four grand. The employees are friendly and knowledgeable, but much of this behavior comes across as a bit schmooze-y, and utilized to try and up-sell you on a product, particularly the money pit that is the "pick your own pearl" tourist trap. For around $17 bucks, you're given the option to pick a oyster from a nearby bucket, where each of the mollusks contained within is guaranteed to hold a pearl of some value (if you do somehow get a dud, they'll let you pick another). The quality and rarity of the pearl within is variable, from your standard white, silver, rose gold, and any other color producible by these miraculous little creatures. We watched as the two year old girl that went before us managed to pick an oyster containing a deep blue pearl that was so rare in color, that the attendant said they don't have any of that particular shade, because they're simply too rare to find in quantity. We watched, slightly uncomfortably, as the attendant tried to convince the girl and her parents, to pick another pearl, likely so the shop could re-sell it for several factors more than the paltry $17 they got for it. When it was our turn, we ended up picking an oyster containing a pearl with a pinking, almost rose gold lustre, and then...let the up-selling begin! Our intent was to create a unique gift for our friend and host, who let us stay in her apartment in Kona, over our vacation weekend, for free! We figured that a setting and chain couldn't be too terribly priced, seeming as we could see various rings and necklaces in the case running around $39 bucks, and hey, we already had the pearl, right? Nah. The most basic setting, containing a small birthstone, and a white gold chain, ratcheted up the price to just shy of $200. Don't get me wrong, I know jewelry is expensive, and we weren't about to cheap out on a gift for a friend, but it felt like a trap. Let's face it: it is a trap. I mean, what are you going to do with an unadorned pearl anyway, besides lose it on accident? One bonus was that, because we purchased a full set (pearl, setting and chain), we were allowed to pick a second bonus oyster and claim another pearl for free, one striking similar to the first, at which point the attendant tried to up-sell us on another full set. Nope! We're good. I guess we ended up with an unattached pearl anyway! Yes, the pick-a-pearl thing is a fun novelty, and we should have asked a few questions about the entire process before committing, so I won't knock the Pearl Factory too hard about it, but I highly recommend you know what you're getting into if you decide to go this route. Otherwise, pick something you like out of the case, or just keep your wallet shut tight like an oyster and keep on walking!

Angela is amazing. She makes great reccomendations for the pearls that you harvest from the oysters available at the shop. I love each and every piece of jewelry that I created/purchased.

We were sold by the pick your own $15 charge to pick out your own oyster, how fun. Pick your own Japanese Pearl for $15 a only. This blue one was a rare find, that was one of the pearls picked by me today. Did get an oyster with a Pearl in every one today. Angela waited on us today, she's super warm, friendly and attentive too. Bought two sets of pendants on the diamond starburst, diamond circle earrings that I can put my Pearl posts in at home. I also got a Maile leaf 2 Pearl ring set. An adjustable amount white gold chain and a island pendant too. My husband was wishing we had walked on by this store in the end. We were here for quite a while. The prices for the diamond pendants, earrings and necklaces might have been cheaper at home, but I much preferred to set them now or they will never be set anytime soon or at all. I left the store with a much, much lighter wallet of sorts. Will have some pretty pearls at least to wear.

They scam you into spending more than just the pearl. The women would not take no for an answer when she was trying to sale me the most expensive setting for the pearl. Terrible customer service and not a good experience.
