Great little museum. The guided tour explains a lot more than the signs

Our tour guide was an elegant Hawaiian woman with an encyclopedic knowledge of local history and traditions. Almost total access to some pretty amazing pieces from around the world owned and used by generations of royalty. Truly inspiring.

Restored and converted in the 1930’s to a historic house museum by the Daughters of Hawaiʻi, Huliheʻe Palace is a former summer home of many of Hawaiʻi’s royal families. The Palace was originally built out of lava rock during the Kingdom of Hawai‘i on land known as Kalāke‘e, a former residence of Kamehameha the Great, and later home to more members of Hawaiian royalty than any other residence in Hawai‘i.
Today, Huliheʻe is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a museum showcasing artifacts from the era of King Kalākaua and Queen Kapi‘olani, including koa wood furniture, royal portraits, ancient weapons of war, kapa, feather work, and Hawaiian quilts.
