This is an update to my review from November 27th. When we finally got a car it was sort of clean and did not a have a full tank. The second agent we dealt with was very pleasant - though she was aware of the issues we had had for three hours awaiting our car, so she didn't try to upsell us. We learned that the first agent, who was completely unhelpful, unsympathetic, condescending, and only wanted to upsell us, also flat out lied to us. We mentioned one location to which we wanted to drive and she said it was absolutely inaccessible without 4-wheel drive. We had done some research and felt that was not the case and it turned out we were right. She assumed that, because we were visitors, we didn't know what we were talking about. When we returned the car, someone finally sauntered over to the area where you drop them off and said, "do you have your contract?", which I provided, checked to see if the tank was full and then said "that's all, you're good" in a surly tone of voice. No "have a nice day", "thank you", nothing.Will not use them again and would not recommend. I would rather pay a little more.

First, a couple of the employees were friendly and nice. We appreciate that.AND, most of our experience with Dollar car rental in Kona was frustrating, disappointing, and problematic.They didn’t have the car we had reserved when we arrived so we had to come back the next day. This messed up an entire day of our travel plans and cost us time and gas to drive back and forth, simply because they didn’t have the vehicle type we’d reserved and needed (note- the alternative options were not good, and we’re really not that picky).Customer service both days of pick-up and upon return was mostly poor, rude, and unhelpful.Also, when we finally got our car on the second day after arrival, after almost 45 minutes of waiting there, they gave us a car that clearly hadn’t been cleaned. At that point we gave up and just took it as is and cleaned it up ourselves (spilled food/drinks, dirt and sand, etc). They had been so rude and unhelpful so far and we’d already wasted so much time we didn’t trust them to deal with that had we asked them to.We understand difficult things can come up with most rental car companies but at a bare minimum we expected kind, helpful customer service. That goes a long way. Sadly that was not the case here.I very rarely leave a negative review for anyone but this company/location earned it. I wished I had read their reviews before renting through them, and won’t again. I hope they’ll do better customer service training with their employees in the future.

I don't know if this will get to management, but the employee who served me, Aleda, was an absolute star and you should feel lucky to have her. Our experience was great. She was informed and knowledgeable and kind. You can tell this is a busy location, we waited a while, plus the Iron Man was coming up so things were going to be nuts for sure, but she was the sweetest, kindest and one of the best sales rep experiences I have had. EVER. Aleda, if you see this, thank you again for your patience, your kindness and for your service with a smile. I'm glad we could laugh and joke together and that our interaction helped your hectic day as much as it helped our hectic travel day and stay on the big island.

If I can rate zero stars I would. You cannot call and speak to anyone from the car rental place if you have issues with your car. I was basically forced to get a minivan which was not what I reserved. The line at the counter was long so I did not want to hold the line and agreed to get the minivan in hopes of returning the next day to exchange but I cannot get a hold of anyone from the rental center. Just an absolute nightmare!

I booked and paid in full online. Get off the plane and onto a shuttle bus to the store.When I get there the guy tried to charge me 900$ for an upgrade with all of the extra insurances. Then they wouldn’t rent me the car without a 500$ deposit. I was under the impression that I was paid in full and this deposit was not disclosed until I got there. Then told me it was against their policy to take me back to the airport. They bussed me out there. No idea where I am. At 11:30 pm they started to close the gates on my 10 year old son and I. I offered 400$ in cash and 100$ in credit and they said it all had to be put in one card. The manager became super rude when I mentioned being a disabled veteran. They left us stuck in the middle of the night in a strange town with no regard for our well-being whatsoever. Either 300$ on credit card or 500$ on a debit. Thanks for absolutely nothing. I’m out 260 bucks having to arrange an Airbnb and Lyft last minute. Not to mention the trauma of the whole ordeal. I got news for the owner, forwarding the complaints to managers that don’t give a damn about complaints does nothing. Retrain your current manager and staff or get rid of them and start fresh. Maybe then you will see some improvement instead of the lame apologies you have been offering. You want to apologize let me have a car for a week for free. I only accept apologies in cash, Goods or services.

Dollar Car Rental was okay, the rental was nice however the wait to get the car was terrible, we had a pick up time and were there a little early as our flight came in a little early. They were understaffed and I feel that if you have a time set to pick up a rental there should be a line just for set times. We waited in line for over an hour just to pick up our rental.

DO NOT RENT FROM HERE. This business WILL scam you for more money by filing false damage claims. We returned our vehicle in the same exact condition that we received it. Inspector walked around it, made note there was NO DAMAGE. We rented for only 24 hours. SEVERAL MONTHS later, this business CHARGES US with OVER $4000 in vehicle damage that obviously did NOT occur when we had the car. We are STILL trying to fight this claim. Have contacted several Hertz representatives who have not helped us at all. SAVE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE, do NOT RENT FROM HERE.

Aleda at Dollar Car Rental was a shining example of exceptional customer service. Her kindness and personable approach made our experience truly enjoyable. When we realized we needed to add insurance after picking up our car, she graciously called us to the front of the line and patiently explained the terms in detail. Aleda's helpfulness and warm demeanor turned a potential hassle into a breeze, leaving us thoroughly impressed and grateful for her assistance. Thank you, Aleda! Laura and Janelle appreciate you! Terrible company and experience. Employees are EXTREMELY rude and unorganized. Was charged a $500 deposit, which wasn’t disclosed previously. Was given a Nissan maxima even though we reserved a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Dirtiest car that I have ever rented, could barely even see out of the windows it was so dirty, brown liquid splattered and spilled everywhere, empty cans left in glove box. Steering wheel barely turned, possibly out of power steering fluid, and passenger side door barely opened. Car was only a 2021 with a little over 40000 miles, but was in absolutely terrible condition. I honestly wondered if they adjusted the odometer because there is no way a car with a little over 40000 miles should be in such terrible condition and run so poorly, and if it wasn’t then they obviously don’t do any maintenance. Insurance card in glove box was expired. Only positive was that I received my deposit back in a timely manner. Please save yourself the trouble and rent a car elsewhere.

Do not waste your time or vacation with this company. Waited over 2 hours in line to get a car that broke down the next day. Had to miss a tour we had planned since the car had to be towed. We wanted a refund for the time we did not use the car since we did not trust getting another car from this company. No refund and got the worst customer service being transferred back and forth with no help. Horrible start to the vacation! This is a horrible scam of a company. 0 stars

Highly recommend renting elsewhere to not wait in a 2.5 hour line for your car. The front desk guy was nice but just laughed and said it’s like this every day. You’d think if that were the case they’d make a more efficient system. He did say you can sign up for express for free and avoid the line, if you rent from here highly recommend doing that to not take a few hours away from your vacation. Hope that helps!Edited to add… we still don’t have our car. After you get through the line you then wait outside for it to be brought over. People next to us waited 45 min.. we’re at 25… hoping it comes soon…

NEVER USE THIS COMPANY. IT IS A SCAM!We booked through Priceline. We declined all the extras. After we returned the car full they added a full fuel tan charge of $156.35 we will be fighting them for quite a while, I am sure. Luckily we live near Kona and can go into the office and make a lot of noise as many times as it takes.By the way the original rental was $372.71. They tried to sham us into insurance for $270 and a fuel charge of $156. We declined that all. They still charged it. We returned to the office at the time of rental when we saw a charge pending. The girl could not find any such charges. She lied to our face.AVOID Dollar and Priceline!

The last thing you want is a 2.5 hour wait after a 16 hour day of flights, trust me. This is the last time I will be renting from Dollar. Kids and family had no shade outside, employees unsympathetic with their "primary driver only in line" policy. Avoid at all costs.

Listen to all the reviews and DO NOT rent from this place. Pay just a tad more elsewhere & you'll be much happier. We waited in line for 2 hours & still didn't have a car much less moved more than a few paces in line. They had 1 person working the check in which is ridiculous because there were about 50 people waiting to get their car. The company knows how many people will be picking up on a certain day based on the reservations made which means they should be able to staff accordingly and based on other reviews, this didn't seem like a fluke or one bad day. We actually had a dinner we were going to miss if we didn't get our car soon so we ended up walking over to the Hertz across the street with no line & walked out with a car. We tried to dispute the rental charge because we weren't able to pick up the car we had paid for unless we wanted to wait 3-4 hours but we still had to pay. We understood this was a possibility but this is just such a terrible way to do business. If you're looking online for a rental & see that this place is the cheapest, its the cheapest for a reason. So unless you want to dedicate a half day of your vacation, I highly suggest paying a tad more to actually get the product & service you paid for in a timely manner.

AWFUL!!! Do not rent a car with this company. It is a waste of time!!! There is a very long queue so do not even book with them if you do not want to waste your vacation time!!!
