What an absolutely lovely place! We showed up right as they opened and it was a great idea. The planetarium movie we caught was about wayfinding, and it was utterly enjoyable. Their current exhibition, Ka 'Ula Wena: Oceanic Red, is a must see. The visual storytelling in the area is incredible.

History of Hawaii

Honestly, although I’ve been to lots of museums around the world, this is by far the worst. Lots of artifacts have a date of made and who made it with no history of use whatsoever. For these few items with the description — it is mix of English and native Hawaiian language that is extremely hard to understand. For non-native English speakers in most cases impossible. And cherry on top - 18$ parking when the admission is already 35$ per person. Crazy. Not in a single museum I’ve seen such a tourist robbery when you just want to learn and understand more of the history and the culture. You will learn more from the locals on the streets

This is a museum where you can learn about the history of Hawaii.
The cloak worn by King Kamehameha is now on display.
(Pure yellow ones are said to be very valuable.)

You get $5 off buying your ticket online, we did so in the parking lot.
Parking is paid and costs $12 per day, I would recommend finding street parking and walking.
The museum itself is big and consists of multiple buildings and gardens. I really liked some of it! Learning about the history made it worth it to me.
The scientific center was disappointing and more for kids.

My 11 years old and 5 years old sons really enjoyed the visit to this museum. We didn’t paid too much attention to the historical parts, but they have the best science exhibition. The exhibition of the volcano is pretty unique. The total exhibition is three floors, in the basement, There is a heating stove to mimic what’s happening inside the volcano and the second floor there is tunnel red lights from the basement to the third floor, the top floor has water in there erupting just like a volcano. and they do have a show in the basement using the magma heat up in the stove to mimic the process how lava was created, We were able to touch different type of lava and learn there difference in the show. There are also a lot of great stuff there kids can experience and learn.

The planetarium is definitely the high light( check the time for different shows, be there early to register, seats are limited, and they do not let late entrance.)
The museum is bigger than I expected, very detailed pieces display there.
The only drawback is a little far away from hotel, bus 2&60 take you there from ala Moana shopping center for 36-45 mins(including 10 mins walk to the entrance).

Is there something wrong with the parking lot? I was surprised at how expensive it was.
I entered the venue without knowing how to pay, and was surprised when something like a no-parking sticker was pasted on me, so I hurriedly paid online.

One of the best museums I’ve been to and highly recommend people take a visit to see it. It takes 2-3 hours if you like taking your time and reading what is interesting. There are also various movies that are played throughout the day which we didn’t have a chance to see. You can pay for parking or you can park on the street just outside the entrance. The gift shop also has a few unique items at decent prices like handmade ornaments which we picked up.

We were initially not interested in going to a museum in Hawai'i. But thanks to getting a bit sunburned the day before, we chose to be indoors one day, and had a very nice day here. We attended the lava show, which is especially recommended for families with children. Then we went to a show in the planetarium. At the end, we spent 3-4 hours going through the main museum where we learned a lot about history and culture.

If you're a first time visitor to Hawai'i- I'd recommend this place.
It gives you a great overview of the history of these islands, especially the rich native Hawaiian history and customs, the history of the modern day diversity in Hawai'i, and the complexity of it's history as part of the US. The stories are well told with great educational exhibits.
An unexpected delight was the great gift shop. This is one of the best places to get souvenirs for your family or friends - and to get some Hawaiian treats for yourself!
You can buy entry tickets online to make it easier though there were no lines when we entered.

I've managed to come to the Bishop every trip out to Hawaii. Like any wonderful museum, there is frankly too much information to absorb in one go. But even in a single visit, this museum shines for me because it so clearly succeeds in breaking down native (for a form of that term meaning pre-Cook) Hawaiian cultural roots into consumable information. These aren't my roots, my pasty bog-dancing barbarians are fascinating to compare/contrast but ultimately the mythos and tragedy of the Kingdom is lovingly curated on these beautiful grounds.
P.S. Watching 'When Whales Walked' and then being face-to-face with the split internal/external display of a life-sized sperm whale, was a bonus

It's very expensive, including the parking fee... I think it would be a good place for people who are very interested in native Hawaiians.
