Service at Hilo Airport was very friendly, helpful and made it very easy. The use of a debit card was greatly appreciated. Not everyone has credit cards, so this payment option was great! Super easy for both pick up and drop off. Highly recommended!

Haven’t gotten our car yet. We get out of the port of the Pride of America to a waiting area to the Avis car rental shuttle. There no line and the lady said that she would remember we were here first since the shuttle just left. We have two kids with us. We wait 20 min. Everyone cuts us and when we try to tell the shuttle driver I get yelled at that I’m arguing. Honestly why not have a checklist in the waiting area to avoid this. It was not our fault we were being polite and not pushing in front of people even though we were first. So much time wasted over poor shuttle communication.

Had a car scheduled for pick up at 8 AM in the morning. When we arrived, we were told there were no cars and we would have to wait. No cars were available until 9:45 AM, and at that time all they had was a Ford Expedition. They said they wouldn’t charge us any more for it than the car we had originally booked. However, when we retured the car, I was billed for $187 where the original car should’ve been about $85.

I flew into Hilo late at night and was ready to rest. At first they couldn’t find my reservation then she did. The car that I was given smelled of mildew terribly. I was too tired to care because I had traveled for 13 hours. I am a travel nurse so this was disappointing for a first impression.

My experiences with customer service on the phone have been terrible. First level agents unable to help with anything but basic changes, and when transferred to someone else for help, being met with confusion and obstacles.My experiences with agents at Avis and Budget locations themselves have been fine and quite positive. Thats the primary reason I go back to Avis.However this does little to offset how the phone support from Avis itself is absolutely terrible. They aren't there to help expedite or make changes on your behalf or help find better options if any are available. Very dissatisfied with Avis phone help. If you are making a basic rental, they are fine. If there is any chance of changes or anything outside of routine to your rental needs, I would avoid Avis.

Most unfriendly staff at drop off! The lady was watching something on her phone and grunted rudly if i can‘t read the sign about the drop off procedure!

KIA Forte worked fine. However, I had problems with something all too common with most car rentals. The side mirrors were caked with mineral deposits, probably due to improper cleaning procedure. They were useless at night with glare from headlights of cars behind me. Also, rain made them even more useless. There must be a better way to maintain the side mirrors to avoid mineral deposits. My personal car at home has no problems with the side mirrors because I keep them clean and free of deposits. This is an industry-wide problem everywhere I rent a car. The other problem is having a clean, clear windshield on the interior surface; any built up haze buildup interferes with clear view, especially with sun glare or oncoming car at night.

The car was pretty beat up, over 50,000 miles with damage and missing bits, it was marked as having a full tank of fuel, but the gauge read less than 7/8 full (I took pictures of the gauge and mileage when I picked it up, but filled it up before I returned it and will make my case later; I got screwed on returning it with the same amount of fuel I started with in the past, but not full). I usually use Budget, a sister company? And have always had great experiences with Budget. Avis, never again!!

I’m doing a b2b on the Pride and rented a car on every island on both cruises.5 stars for Hilo, they send a free shuttle to AND from the port and the driver is delightful. She tells you everything you need to know getting and returning your car. The airport is small so you’re in and out and on your way in no time. Car selection is smaller than some other islands but still perfectly sufficient for puttering around the island. My second time around I made my reservation quite late at night right before arriving in Hilo and they still had the car ready to go at 9am.The return procedure is a little different at each of the islands but they explain it clearly so just pay attention. For example, at Hilo you record the mileage yourself since no one is inspecting your car at checkin.Easy peasy. Would rent again here without hesitation.
