We have visited Dr.Powell-Johnson twice now for my dog who has bad chronic dry eyes. She is extremely knowledgeable. The visits are not cheap, but if you need an eye vet specialist, they are excellent. They run promptly on time.

I've had the worst experience and would not recommend this provider to anyone. After cancelling my initial appointment well in advance of their 24 hour policy, then later rescheduling I was still charged a $108 cancellation fee. I called the office and was told it would be credited back to my card, which never happened.
When I visited for my new appointment today, I mentioned this to the desk. While the staff were friendly, Dr. Gail was very rude and unprofessional. After she already had reviewed my pet's history with me and had taken him back for his evaluation, she actually returned to the lobby to confront me over my concern for the previous unauthorized and invalid charge.
Rather than prioritize the care of my dog, she was more concerned about trying to prove me wrong and collect money. She went on to lecture me in front of her staff...all while I gave her the exact dates and times of my cancellation and subsequent request and approval of the refund. She even went on a bizarre tirade to state her concern that I might request a refund for her services performed today while at the appointment. I have absolutely no idea where this ludicrous idea spawned from but she has certainly lost a client with me.
I could sense from her awkward and distant demeanor when we initially met that something was off, but certainly nothing like this. This treatment and lack of prioritizing my pet's care over money does not personally instill any confidence that she would properly care for my pet. I've shared this experience with my primary vet who initially referred me to this practice.

Called for a recheck. They can't seem to find their patients in their system. If they can't keep up with their own patients why would anyone want to take their pets here? Very displeased.

I would avoid this vet at all cost. Dr. Powell-Johnson was cold, rude, lacks empathy and compassion. She is down right mean. If she is like that in front of me no telling how she treats the dogs/cats when no one is around.
I would give zero stars if that was an option.

Do not hesitate to see Dr. Johnson and her friendly staff if your pet needs eye care. Very informative and reasonable.

I have a cat with uveitis. I had her treated by another provider and she has been on medication, but I also had a bad experience with that other provider. In that context, I called AVEC to see if they could do the follow up pressure check to see if the medication had resolved my cat's issue. Unfortunately, I was told that I would have to pay for a complete examination, including three other procedures that I don't need and cannot afford. This seems like prioritizing wringing as much revenue out of me as possible, as opposed to providing the care my cat needs. After all, I could easily have provided the records from my previous ophthamologists. For this reason, AVEC lost me as a customer and lost my respect. It is clear that their priority is monetizing pet sickness, not promoting healthy outcomes for our pets.

The Dr. is super knowledgeable and breaks down everything for you, even tells you about breed specific issues. Our first appointment went smoothly, but our second appointment was right after the holidays and they were backed up on our scheduled appointment day. We waited for 30+ minutes in the parking lot, so I started driving around to calm my anxious pup. When they finally called to say that they were ready, they threatened to cancel/reschedule because we weren't immediately available. Lesson learned: avoid making late-day appointments if you can. Also, the front desk person who does most of the phone correspondence is a bit hard to understand. All that said, still grateful to have a specialist like this in the Atlanta area.

My dog was a patient here for two years. The doctor was consistently insulting, condescending, and extremely expensive. I do not recommend. Also gave an EXTREMELY high quote for eye surgery. I opted to go elsewhere where the cost was less than a quarter of what what she proposed. I know the cost was exorbitant because I worked with a charity for my animal's surgery and they told me it was the highest quote they had ever seen.

Dr. Powell and her staff are fantastic and I highly recommend them. The staff is very friendly, creating an almost family feel, and Dr. Powell is an absolute expert when it comes to eye issues. She knows how to explain it for the layman, which is extremely helpful. My piece of advice, if given the option between the collagen drops and the more costly stem cell drops is to bite the bullet and get the stem cell drops. It just works exponentially faster.

I am so grateful for Dr. Gail Powell-Johnson and her team! When I first adopted my kittens, they had that sort of standard kitten goopy eye, but it soon became clear that one cat's problems weren't going away. After a few different treatments through my primary vet, I was referred to AVEC. The doctor did a thorough exam of my cat, figured out what was going on, and has been honing a treatment plan over the last several months to make sure that the cat's chronically dry eyes don't lead to anything more severe. The doctor is super responsive to my concerns about what works and what doesn't when I actually try to get eye meds on properly in my home, and the entire team treats my cat with a ton of care. At our most recent visit, my cat was very nervous when we arrived. She was breathing fast and generally unhappy. After going back into the exam room, she came out content and relaxed because everyone working here is really kind with the animals in their care and gave her some extra massaging and love to show she was safe. Her eyes are looking clear and she doesn't show signs of discomfort since we started the recommended medications, which is such a relief. I know her tiny eyeballs are in good hands!!

Please avoid this place if you care about your animal. When I first walked in I was told where I could sit and then waited for the doctor. The doctor came out and sat across from me in the lobby and asked about prior medical history and then took my cat back and I wasn’t allowed to be with him. Within 1 minute she came back with a told me my cat was too aggressive to complete the exam. Please keep in mind I’ve never have had a vet EVER tell me that he’s aggressive during a visit it’s always been he’s the nicest. She said she was able to see the eyeball and its components and it was fine, all in under 1 minute? But she would need to see him again but under mild sedation. When my cat was brought back to me he was calm as could be and just laid in his carrier. Then she pulled out a bunch of books of eyes to try and make herself feel justified charging me the $160 for the 1 minute exam. If you don’t feel comfortable treating cats tell the patient prior to pick up sedation medication, not charge them $160 for 2 pills and no conclusions of the problem and say we will have to see you again when your cat is sedated and pay all the exams again. I also find it strange that where I was told I needed to sit I had no view of the exam happening and the fact that I wasn’t allowed back with my pet seemed odd. Avoid this place at all cost. I left and made an appointment with BluePearl veterinarian clinic a reputable ophthalmology clinic for animals.

First, I’d like to say how wonderful the office staff was to me and my senior golden retriever. I received excellent instructions about the office, parking, etc. They are very transparent about the pricing, and I was actually surprised how reasonable the final bill was including the various medications.Second, Dr. Powell is awesome! She is so relaxed and doesn’t rush. She really wanted to hear about my dog, and this helped us feel more at ease. Dr. Powell knows her stuff when it comes to veterinary eye care and helped me to understand what the issue was for my dog. Dr. Powell is also very knowledgeable about a holistic approach to daily care and made a few recommendations which I immediately began that day.I feel very fortunate to have my dog cared for by Dr. Powell and the office team. My dog’s eye is so much better, and I feel so appreciative that he’s doing well.
