We've been going to Tavares Animal Hospital since we rescued our dog (9 years). We have always been happy with their service. When our dog had pancreatitis they helped us through the process of getting him well again! Even though a bit pricey, I do recommend them!

I went to Tavares Animal Hospital to do the most difficult thing a parent has to do. My dog Louie has cancer, has had surgery once. The cancer is in his liver now and was recently diagnosed with congestive heart failure. He is losing his eyesight and has "benign" tumors all over him. One on his back leg with he favors a lot due to pain.I have gone to this animal hospital for years but this particular vet doctor was new to us. Louie has bitten a couple people in the last 2 months including me and a few weeks ago another doctor there told me she believes it was pain related. After he bit me I called to make "the" appointment as I didn't want him to suffer anymore or to bite anyone else. I made the appointment 5 days in advance to prepare my head and give Louie extra love and attention. I told the nurses up from all the details of his medical history as well as the biting. We made the appointment. When we can into our appointment. I told the nurse in the room be careful picking him up he has a tendency of biting because of pain. She left the room and then came back The nurse asked when it was he bit me. We told her it was Friday last week. The vet comes in and says we can't do "it" we have to wait 10 days. I have a friend with me who was there the entire time who was also crying. Mind you I have been a mess for days and we are crying as the vet is telling me this. They have to make sure he doesn't have rabies, the Doc said. I said what? He doesn't have rabies! Now you say that? I told him I told the other nurses who made the so and vet we saw weeks earlier that he had bit me and no one ever mentioned that to me. I said he comes here to this Vet...this is his veterinary clinic. He's caught up on all his shots always has been including his rabies shot. Please check and see. I was also told by the other Doctor and nurses his aggression probably had a lot to do with his pain. The doctor said it doesn't matter they have to wait 10 days ...or euthanize him, get this....The doctor literally says to me or they euthanize him and then cut off his head and send it to the lab for testing, I said, are you kidding me? He doesn't have rabies. He has cancer, he has congestive heart failure he's losing his eyesight. Now all I can think about is them cutting my dogs head off and am shaking and mad! Why do get got rabies shots and keep them up to date and none of it really means anything? If we still have to go through all of this quarantine and cutting heads off. WTH?!! But let's say that's what they have to do. What kind of vet says that to a pet Mom ???? This guy had 0 compassion. I don't care what his reviews say he walked in the room said what he said and showed no emotion whatsoever. My Louie is struggling in a lot of ways, but he doesn't have rabies. He said he's sorry that that's the law. I said if that's the law, then your receptionist and nurses should've known it before they made this appointment and made me go through all this for the last four 1/2 days to go through it all over again. And I walked out and left. I was so very upset with this guy. I have had more than 2 dozen dogs and 10 cats in my lifetime and never have had this terrible and horrific emotional experience. I will never go back to Tavares Animal Hospital again! That Dr. Jonathan Blackwell is an A hole! So much for good ole compassion. . This has been hardest on me, he doesn't know what's going on. My stomach is in knots. I am so upset. Update I called the Tavares Animals hospital manager. She let m talk then proceeded to take the doctors side immediately. She didn't think he did anything wrong or the hospital did anything wrong. She said that's what they do and that's the law. She said they do cut the dogs head off and send it to be tested and she doesn't thing he was out of line telling me that. She was more interested in defending her hospital and doctor than showing me any compassion. I mentioned putting my experience on fb

Took in my Guinea pig who was sick and the vet was extremely knowledgeable and gave me great info. Unfortunately my pig got severely worse after the visit and did not make it to the scheduled surgery. Now my other senior Guinea pig is becoming very sick so I called to ask for advice. The receptionist had such a lack of emotion, after me saying my Guinea pig is DYING. No sympathy or even sounding like she cared. Get a different job if you can't at least PRETEND to care about people and their beloved animals.

Had a scheduled appointment and ended up leaving because no one, and I mean no one, came to welcome and check in my pet after an hour of waiting. However, everyone else in the waiting room were serviced appropriately and apologized to for the extended wait time. I finally got up and left after hearing one of the staff say they were going to lunch in 15 minutes. How?! When there is still a customer in the waiting room?! Maybe I'm invisible. I will not be returning nor recommending this animal hospital to anyone.

Horrible experience. Dr. Scott Wells in incompetent. They were given medical records from breeder and administered a vaccine incorrectly which was already given previously (so our puppy got a shot she wasn't supposed to get) They also said they gave her a lepto vaccine but later admitted they did not give lepto and gave her a lime vaccine by mistake. They incorrectly diagnosed tapeworms. Even after we brought 3 different fecal samples in. Office manager is condescending. Never will go again. This place should be shut down. The office manager stated "well I guess when you mess up, you really mess up" (referring to the clinic) If they made 3 mistakes with a puppy in two visits, I wonder how many other mistakes they make.

I have been a client of Tavares Animal Hospital for over 20 years. This was probably the best vet in town.......back then. I believe the business has had 2or3 oweners since. Three days ago I took my cat there on an emergency because he stopped eating and drinking water and was very lethargic. This can be a very dangerous situation if it goes on for more than a couple of days. The vet poked and prodded a bit then took him in the back to get blood and urine When she was done she came out and said the results would be back the next day. The next morning I waited anxiously for the results I heard nothing. I called in the afternoon and was told that the vet returns calls at the end of the day. I waited. Nothing. The next day and I am still waiting. When I called this morning I was told she had an "emergency" but she would get back to me later. ........unless of course she has ANOTHER emergency. This is completely unacceptable! my cat is not getting better. I will now have to take him in t a new vet and traumatize him again. This place no longer cares about the people or the animals they serve. If my cat dies there WILL be a lawsuit.

Our sweet 3 year old teacup yorkie crossed the rainbow bridge unexpectedly and the staff at Tavares Animal Hospital was so sweet and caring. They took her immediately to help figure out why this had happened. Thank you for your kind words and the beautiful ern that you placed her remains in.

I was a current client of Tavares Animal Hospital. I spend a over $1000 a year here. When I inquired about my dog's Teeth cleaning I was told $290 less a 20% discount. If they need to do an extraction they would phone first and it is $160 per tooth if needed. On the morning of the appointment; they wanted me to sign acknowledging that the cleaning could be up to $400 depending on the level of effort by the vet. They also brought out another paper requesting I sign acknowledging that additional charges up to $610 could be charged. A total bait and switch tactic. This is A Vet, I felt like I was in A Used car lot in the 1980's. Everyone there I spoke to defended this bait and switch practice. You getting 20% off of nothing. I would rather be told up front that it is going to be $1000 for the cleaning and give me 20% off the $1000. Not lure me in with $290-and then tell me the day of the appointment this procedure could cost $1000. Other Vets charge a flat rate. Very unethical. Very disappointed that the Owner, Managers, and Staff failed to acknowledge the flaw in their quoting vs what actually will be billed. Trust lost. Find a Vet you can Trust.
