We hadn't been to Tarpon Springs in a long time. We wanted to revisit the Sponge Museum. We went to Spongearama Factory and were told the Sponge Museum was gone due to flooding. Awww...that was sad news. We wandered around with our young grandson and made some choices. We had seen the exact items throughout Tarpon Springs at lower prices. Our grandson wasn't interested in going to the less expensive places. I went to the counter to make our purchases and once again exclaimed our sadness about the Sponge Museum demise. The woman then went on the most elaborate conspiracy theory about how the government is sending signals to make flooding happen and that the insurance companies are in cahoots so that can make everywhere a flood zone. OOUPH!

This sponge factory is located in Tarpon Springs, Florida. We were walking by and decided to check it out. At first glance, it's a gift shop with natural sponge from the Gulf of Mexico nearby and goat milk soap; there were other various knick knacks too. A typical and common gift shop for the area.
Tarpon Springs is known for their sponge diving and harvesting. This place also offers sightseeing cruises; you are able to view dolphins and manatees swimming by. The cruise also stops by a beach; you can pick up shells for souvenirs. There was a photo op outside with a sponge diver structure. Parking was spacious and they have a Greek restaurant nearby called Yiannis.
We didn't go on the cruise or go to the restaurant but we did shop at the gift shop; I bought some goat milk soap that was on sale. Overall, decent spot to buy some souvenirs, soap, and sponges.

It's nice, you go out on a large pontoon boat ride to Anclote island. You get 30 minutes to walk the beach there and find shells. Kids love it. Then, you ride back. It's an enjoyable experience. Just make sure the weather will be nice.

Touristy, but not a trap. Free looping video to learn about the history, process, and products and then you're free to shop around. They make it fun to learn about sponges!

Small store, but they had the sponges I was looking for. The ladies working in the site were very helpful and pleasant.

We booked a 4pm cruise this morning on line. When we went to check in at 330 the lady out front in the booth told us it was too early. We went to look around the sponge dock store and asked the cashier at the store when was a good time to check in for the 4pm cruise. She said that we had to go back to the booth. After walking back across the parking lot to the booth we were told that they did not have us on their reservation list and were over booked. I showed her the email confirmation and she told me we had to wait until 6 to go. I asked for a refund and left. Do not book this cruise! Go right down the street to Odyssey on the same side of the road. They are so much nicer!

Prices for sponges are nearly double what we found down the street at sponge factory. The tiny sponge I paid $8 for — plus a credit card surcharge — was $3 elsewhere. Their movie is also very old in comparison.

They have all kinds of sponges to choose from. They have some in water, so you can feel them wet. This helps in picking which type you want. There is a movie that tells some sponge history that is interesting.
