Alpine Steakhouse & Butcher Shop is the oldest premier restaurant, steakhouse, meat market, butcher shop and small specialty grocery all under one roof in Sarasota, Florida. Located at 4520 South Tamiami Trail, it is open from 9 to 9 Tuesday through Saturday and has earned a wide-spread reputation over more than 40 years for its turducken and German dishes. Turducken, the ultimate poultry dish, popular at Thanksgiving, consists of a deboned chicken stuffed into a deboned duck, further stuffed into a deboned turkey. Call it a three-bird roast. It was made famous by legendary football coach/broadcaster John Madden, who introduced turducken to the world on December 1, 1996 before an NFL game on national TV. With apologies to turducken, my wife and I chose something more traditional when we made our most recent visit to Alpine. We started with shrimp cocktail and bowls of tomato bisque and baked French Onion soup. For her entree, my wife had an eight-ounce filet, a prime center cut with bearnaise sauce, baked potato with sour cream and fresh vegetables. I opted for a 14-ounce Delmonico steak, a prime ribeye, cut from a succulent rib roast, with a stuffed twice baked potato and sauteed mushrooms and onions. For dessert, we shared portions of hot apple strudel and peach cobbler. I'll bet John Madden would have a difficult time passing up either of those meals.

After hearing so much about this place, 6 of us drove up from Venice. It is an older restaurant with no updating. Our server was friendly and efficient however put in my burger as medium when I ordered medium rare. It tasted ok but I like pink meat. The steaks were pricey but good, cooked correctly. Onion rings were highly touted, but not worth an extra $3 . The Turducken was underwhelming, the portion being small for the price. The best part of the place is the market. Prices were fairly reasonable for prepared items as well as meat and chicken. Buy it, make dinner at home for a lower priced meal.

We went to Alpine this evening with high expectations after having enjoyed a couple of tasty lunches. What a disappointment! We ordered the $59.00 Delmonico Rib-eye Steak expecting perfection. It was simply a bad cut of meat ...very tough and average taste ...nowhere worth the price. We will be reluctant to go there again for dinner as a result of this unfortunate experience. Having thought about it ,we should have simply sent the steak back and tried again ...but ...I guess we were so surprised that it was so bad ...we were in kind of shock. On a good note ...the service was pleasant, and we were seated promptly with our reservation. Was this simply a bad night for us? ...or has the Alpines quality fallen? Time will tell. Rick & Barbie

Truly outstanding food quality at both the Butcher Shop and restaurant and very good service. Our favorites are the Hungarian goulash, lamb chops, chargrilled burger, twice baked potato, healthy slaw. From the butcher shop we love the thick pork ribs, osso buco, meat for making pot roast and homemade bratwurst.Family owned and owners Matt and Heather are there seemingly every day.Old time Sarasota people may know this location as Karl Ehmers.

Looks like a locals kind of place no too far from downtown. It was busy on a Saturday we went there for lunch. The butcher shop is inside the restaurant and there are plenty of choices. The different kind of deli meats are prepared there so it makes for a fresh sandwich. For lunch my husband ordered a pastrami sandwich and was very pleased with it. I ordered the turducken and it was so tender. With the turduken you get like a Thanksgiving meal so it is very filling. Plenty of parking, reasonable prices and wait staff are very personable.
