What to do on a sizzling summer day? Be a beachcomber, go rafting on the Rainbow? How about antiquing? – a fun, educational “blast from the past” via representational cultural artifacts of days gone by. This was my first time at Old Cracker House Antique Mall which has been around for some time in Ocala, FL. Their floorplan is a layout of rental booths featuring an eclectic mash-up of old, vintage, and not quite new, although in comparison to their competitor across the street, Digger’s, Old Cracker’s bona-fide antique offerings are not as extensive.
Sign out front states that all purses must be worn body crossed, which I did, placing against my stomach my modest boho bag which was not a model that could hide an elephant or serve as a substitute weight lift. Yet, upon entry, I was informed to either place my purse in my vehicle (a law enforcement “no-no”) or in one of their keyed lockers. No doubt AAA has been called there due to car keys (still in a purse) being inadvertently locked in a vehicle given this Old Cracker House rule.
I chose the locker, but was basically uneasy during the whole visit once I lost visual sight of its location. Naturally, management would have a master key if entry could not be regained for any reason. It gave me pause.
The grand dames at the register stated that there had been a lot of store item breakage from swinging purses. Well, call me a curmudgeon, but consistency is important because I saw another female shopper with her purse casually slung over her shoulder. Guess they missed her…and I called them on that, as the shopper could clearly be seen from where they were at check-out. My husband wondered whether the policy was enacted due to theft, which seemed more logical, especially when a young man sauntered in and promptly picked up a “tisk-it-tasket” heavy duty plastic basket with metal handles (identical to ones in grocery stores) near the front door. Those shopping baskets can do much more damage to breakables.
Also, if Old Cracker House is concerned about property damage, they should “Stanley Steam” the creases in some of their carpeting that could trip patrons, resulting in serious bodily injury as well as item breakage. We walked through two booths with no carpet, but such rutted, uneven, pitted concrete: another recipe for disaster. Safety of the patrons is as important as safety of the merchandise, if not more so.
Honestly, the “purse policy” was a bit off-putting for me, dampening my overall experience which would have been otherwise very positive. Why? Because the sales ladies did not enforce the rule across the board. Plus, it seemed specious, at best, that they would not be concerned about the real potential for merchandise damage from clunky, solid, awkward shopping baskets being carried down the narrow aisles, and into nooks and crannies where said baskets could easily knock things over.
Store theft seems to be the most likely reason behind the restriction of purses. As an ingrained reflex, ironically, I checked and verified the contents of mine once I got it out of the locker and before leaving Old Cracker House Antique Mall.

On any other day, I enjoy shopping here. It’s about a hour from where I live so we usually make a day of visiting the different antique stores in the area. Having visited the store on many occasions over the years, I’m familiar with their policies regarding bags and purses. They have a handwritten sign on the door that reads, no “large” purses or backpacks aloud… In the past, we’ve been asked to wear our bags cross shouldered because they’re small bags.. (big enough for a wallet, phone , and sanitizer…. and have never had an issue. Today was different though, and I’m not sure I’ll go back. We walked in, and the woman and man sitting behind the counter told us (not asked) that we needed to leave our bags in the car or use a locker. No hello, no greeting.. just orders…. Which was a bit surprising. My friend politely explained that he’d wear it crossed shoulder as we’ve done in the past. Then the woman said no… you need to leave it in your car or use a locker… not completely hostile but definitely condescending. So my friend complied. The woman made a face an comment to the man.. and then they laughed at us not knowing I could see them. Regardless, walking around, we noticed no one else was asked to “follow the rules” and as we were leaving, we quietly brought it to their attention (not trying to cause a scene) rather than hear us out, we got nothing but contempt and the man asked if I didn’t have anything better to do than “be an idiot” all the while the woman sat there and ate her Cheetos. I didn’t raise my voice, or try to escalate the situation, I was just confused why we were singled out. so we left. Our bags were no larger than the other customers in the photos. Smaller in one case.

This place is a dream for a collector of mid century glassware! Each vendor has their own style and it was neat seeing what they all had. The 1970’s kitchen products were very unique! Prices were mostly reasonable - it varies depending on the vendor. The people at the front desk were helpful. They had a fridge with drinks for $1.00 which saved us on a hot summer FL day.

Very clean and well organized, staff is super friendly and knowledgeable about things around the store as far as if you're looking for something specific they know where to show you.
I travel through Ocala maybe once evyother year and always stop here. Perfect size to get through in an hour if you're pressed for time or if you're out just taking the day you can spend hours here looking through all they have to offer

This place is a collector's and antiques dream picking under one roof. If you can imagine it's like walking back in time. Prices are reasonable and I saw a few things I'm considering but as they say I visited I saw and all I came home with was an ashtray and a nice one at that. A must see if this is up your alley..

Came here looking for a tea cup and this place did not disappoint! It’s much bigger than it looks from outside and prices are fair :) super nice staff.
