I’ve know Art since 1992. He’s always done a great job on my vehicle repairs. After moving to NC in 1997 I still drive back to Art for repairs. He fixes my 6 brothers and sisters vehicles and my kids too. We’ll all miss him when he retires. Thanks Art!

The man is honest, efficient, reliable and reasonable. Let me tell you my story: Art's establishment is on a street that is almost directly across from Rentz of Clearwater. And it was Rentz of Clearwater that drove me to Art's - but only out of sheer desperation. I needed a trailer hitch to pull a U-Haul containing my belongings and some furniture from my winter vacation condo in Clearwater back to my home in Canada. Rentz pretty much has the corner on the local hitch market. My vehicle is a Lexus. As with most north-based cars (even relatively new models), this means the underside can become quite rust-coated. Winter snow and the application of road salt play havoc with the surfaces of exposed metal. I visited Rentz in late February (after making an appointment and ensuring that the required Curt hitch was in stock). To Jake Siewruk, a member of the owning family, I gave instructions to proceed with the work. The vehicle was driven into the shop. My wait was brief. Jake informed me that it was impossible to install the hitch. He told me the existing bolts in the Lexus frame were completely rusted. Even the threads were unusable. Worst of all, he told me there was no fix for the problem. This was distressing news. The U-Haul I required desperately. It was the only way to move my belongings north at a reasonable cost while allowing me to feel confident they would not be damaged while in transit. Even more important, I wanted to take my possessions through Canada Customs in person. If I used a cartage company, the Canada Border Services Agency (as it is called) would treat them as "unaccompanied goods." This would result in a host of customs and excise complications, with which I will not engage you here. (If I described them, you would be in tears.) Finally, after much worry and distress, I concluded Art's Auto had to be the answer to my hitch difficulty. I had used him many times in the past and found him always to be the very soul of honesty, experience and reliability. So I made an appointment and took my car to him. Upon arrival, I outlined the rust concern as it had been outlined to me by Jake Siewruk at Rentz. Art's response was a great relief: "That shouldn't be an issue." He raised my car on the hoist and started work immediately. Luckily, I was able to observe the entire installation process as he toiled. Surprise! The removable bolts in the car's frame came loose without problems - admittedly after much torquing by Art. And there was not a mark of rust to be seen on them. Likewise, the threads in the boltholes were as clean and sharp as the day they were manufactured. It was obvious: The Rentz technician had not even tried to remove them. After Art's installation was completed, I found his fee to be more than reasonable. More important, I felt enormous relief leaving his garage knowing my hitch was now in place - firm, secure and safe. What should we conclude about Art's Auto vs. Rentz? I suppose the difference is honesty. There is no other way to say it. Jake Siewruk of Rentz had told me an elaborate lie. When I confronted him about it later, he claimed it was a safety issue. But Art had installed the Curt hitch exactly as detailed in the instructions that came with it, using the supplied bolts and washers. What safety issue? The moral of the story? If you need honest, reliable repair work on a car in Clearwater, use Art's Auto on Sherwood St. If you decide to use Rentz, be very, very careful. Despite its prominence in the world of trailer hitches, the owners are quite willing to give erroneous and harmful information to their clients if it helps to boost profits. Don't say I didn't warn you.
