Rotten produce sitting on the shelves for weeks. Have watched the same Brussel sprout decay slowly over weekly visits.

The store at 490 L street Nw in Washington DC I’ve just had a horrible experience I won’t soon forget. I’ve shopped there for over 8 years I couldn’t believe I was stopped in the middle of using the self checkout as there was 8 open lanes and told I couldn’t continue to checkout there. I already had scanned a bag full of groceries and there was only 2 manned checkout lanes open with long lines at the time. I was told due to theft they were now enforcing 15 items or less which they haven’t done in the 8 years I’ve shopped there. That’s fine to do so, but there were 15 unmanned cashier lanes closed at peak time on a Saturday afternoon. So to not permit anyone in the self checkout lanes is insane. Moreover to let me proceed to check out in the self checkout lane for several minutes and then be stopped and pulled out of doing so was both astonishing and embarrassing. I spend hundreds of dollars each week at that store but no more. The managers were clearly following orders to not let anyone use self checkout, but this implementation to yank customers out of the middle of a transaction is insane, especially since the new security gate has been installed and you already need to scan a receipt to exit. I have been a loyal customer and not who you should be targeting to crack down on theft. Very disappointed.

In the time it takes to check out I could've walked across town to someplace better. Too many unused registers!
I wrote that more than a year ago. Now they have more registers open. Still nowhere near all of them but much better. And better shoplifting prevention. Up from 2 stars to 3. With a better selection of healthy, fresh food they can improve some more.

I went there looking for antifreeze for my car. They didn't have any but I found some other items that I had been looking for in other places.

This place always has something going on, if it isn’t theft they are closing 10 to 20 minutes early without explanation or cause. If you close early update the hours. You don’t close when YOU want to that’s insane.

Have fun waiting 20 minutes in line for the 2 of 8 working self checkout machines.

Customer service was terrible. Stood at the self checkout while 5 employees had conversations and played on their phones before acknowledging that my register needed assistance.

This grocery store is incredibly frustrating. First off, the entrance: Half of the time one of the doors is blocked and shut off without any signage whatsoever, which changes the flow of people in and out to the point where it is always a hectic foyer. When you walk in, there are massive flower displays blocking ease of flow into the actual store, which is now gated off and inaccessible unless you walk on the left hand side of the entrance (which would be fine if we were in a British territory, but here makes NO SENSE). Produce is relatively fine, selection is oddly sparce for the size of the store (a small brooklyn bodega often will have more selection). Let's say you need help finding something? Good luck having to either push a security hinged door and sound an alarm to get to the customer service desk, or jumping a fence since there is no easy way to get from the store to customer service. Last time I was able to sound the alarm, I was chided for not only doing so, but then laughed at when I asked about a product and told "we can't help you find anything you can't find online." Come in at a busy time and want to go through self-checkout? Good luck finding the line that again has no signage, nor a person helping direct the flow. Now watch as the line goes incredibly slow because half of the machines have been strategically shut off. When you do finish, feel free to attempt to leave using your receipt bar code and a security door that AGAIN!!!!! HAS NO SIGNAGE!!!! and are often faulty.
Not sure who is managing this store, and I don't want this to sound personal, but most people with two eyes and a high school diploma could do a better job at flow management. Listen, the bar is already pretty low for DC grocery stores, but this place absolutely takes the cake on poor store design/flow management, and could use better trained (and probably better paid) staff. Get corporate involved? I'm sure a store in a neighborhood that is quickly increasing in high income density could benefit from some thought-driven improvements, the ROI on making this store work would definitely be justified.

It is impossible to get any assistance at this store. I shop in the evening, and every time I go the customer service desk is unstaffed and the only staff to be found is near the checkout. However, if you ask any of them for help finding something on the shelves or a price check, they say they can't help (and I experienced 2 cases in the past few weeks where items didn't have a price on them, so this was really a hassle).
The fresh produce section, especially the berries, is also pretty low quality -- I find that purchased produce goes bad a lot more quickly than from other stores.
However, they do have a good selection of items, and the location is convenient. The florist section is beautiful too, especially the refrigerated arrangements.

I was mid meal and was missing one ingredient, so i was very happy to see that Safeway was still open until 10! Unfortunately, at 9:55 the doors were locked and security sent me away. I would understand someone standing at the door and telling me I only have 5 minutes to shop, but sending me away really ruined my whole experience.

Staff here are very friendly- over the past couple months there is a clear increase of people who are shopping with dogs. Not service dogs or emotional support dogs- but pets. I understand it may be hard to get folks to be compliant, but someone who has allergies to dogs/ dander I feel bad for.

ApplePay hasn't worked for at least 4 years. Don't use ApplePay because they never fix their system and they haven't gotten around to fixing it.
