Sadly, new owners purchased the market over a year ago and the shelves are barren and worst than what we encountered in the pandemic. It is no longer a neighborhood gem. The staff are friendly and kind and they're the only saving grace for this destitute space. It’s incredulous that the owners have allowed this store to look like the apocalypse hit it. They apparently lack the knowledge and expertise to run a grocery market business. Please consider turning this store over to more competent and qualified hands in the business.

In the heart of the community lies Open Door Market, a modest yet cherished establishment run by an incomparable lady. With her warm smile and genuine kindness, she embodies the essence of what it means to be a beloved local business owner. Her unwavering dedication to customer service goes above and beyond mere transactions; it's about fostering genuine connections with each person who walks through his doors. Whether you're a regular patron or a first-time visitor, she greets everyone with the same level of warmth and hospitality, making you feel like part of the family from the moment you step inside. One of her most remarkable qualities is his genuine concern for the well-being of her customers. She takes the time to listen attentively to their needs and preferences, offering personalized recommendations and going the extra mile to ensure they find exactly what they're looking for. From sourcing hard-to-find ingredients to providing cooking tips and recipe suggestions, her expertise knows no bounds.I was a regular here for the five days whilst residing at The Normandy Hotel. She makes killer sandwiches!!!

I’m being encouraging by the 3 starts hoping that the owner will wake up and stop the declining caliber of this would be gem of a neighborhood market and corner convenience to those who have and would frequent the store. But it is so far worse than it ever was and I am very disappointed. Please sell or step up to the challenge!

Has so much potential because there aren’t many markets in the neighborhood. They decide to charge exorbitant prices on everything, they don’t have staple ingredients (constantly out of things like milk, butter and maple syrup), and I just went to go buy some beer…. It’s completely taped over and you can no longer buy alcohol here because they let their license expire. Joke of a place.

I was staying two nights in DC, and this was such a clean, elegant, and convenient market for a few staples! The staff are lovely, and it’s a beautiful walk here from Columbia Rd NW.

I'm visiting DC and dropped in to buy some snacks, none of which had any price tags, and was shocked at how much they cost when I went to check out. I couldn't see the prices as the cashier rang the items up, and she even tell me how much the total was at the end. I had to look up how much it was on my phone after the charge went through. Would really appreciate at least some more price transparency

I stopped in today, probably at a bad time. Everyone seemed upset. A client was complaining that they lost her drycleaning and an employee had to deal with it. Anyway, i looked around and they do have some quality products (including hebel halva, which nobody else sells in NW as far as I know), but in general their prices are high. I get it, it's Kalorama, but still.

In review of the recent negative reviews, I felt compelled to leave a review but meant to do so sooner. I am not affiliated with this store personally, but I am a frequent patron and live in the 'hood. This market is my go-to for convenience based on its location. If I'm too lazy to hoof it to Safeway, it's a life saver for most common products and/or goods in a pinch. To the reviewer who felt it necessary to inject the ageism slight (with a nice does of sexism) into your review, if you want someone to "serve" you coffee, then go to Dolcezza around the corner and pay 2-3x more. The coffee at Open Door Market is self-service, it's not a cafe. Also, there a several employees, such as Karen, who are gems with glowing personalities. I, too, have experienced a rather lackluster greeting from one of the owners but I chalked it up to life and her fatigue. Running a grocery business is no easy feat. However, I am of the old school tradition of stellar customer service with a smile but an occasional negative attitude isn't a reflection of the overall experience of shopping at Open Door. This neighborhood market is a jewel if you're nearby and looking for well-stocked, delectable food offerings in Sheridan-Kalorama...and don't forget to check out their selection of wines and prosecco!
