With the weather rainy and cold, this was the perfect place to spend a day inside... with thousands of other people.Shared space with the American Art Museum, the Portrait Gallery is a fantastic space to immerse yourself in learning about American historical figures who were wealthy enough to have paintings made of themselves and some photographs, as well.Definitely use the Highlights Tour audio guide. It helps to structure your time and you can still poke around interesting portraits that stand out. There's so much on the walls of this gallery, you need some kind of direction to help. The American Presidents hall was the busiest area, patience is necessary to read all the interpretive signage with other people's heads in the way.

Orchid show in the atrium was awesome!Tip: If you're looking for a place to sit and relax / charge your devices while waiting for your loved ones, hit the top floor. There are tables in one of the room for this.

My daughter signed my granddaughter up for the Teen Graphic Novel Reading Group at the National Portrait Gallery. We went as a family to an introduction to the group hosted by Ms. Sahtiya Hammell and Ms. Erin Koester Tussell. We were really pleasantly surprised. It was so interesting I actually found myself asking questions and participating. The culminating activity was a quilt making activity. Thanks to you both for making our visit to the museum wonderful. I’ll be back.

The presidential portraits are amazing, but there is so much more. One of the best museums in DC, and that's saying a lot!

Celebrated women’s history month last weekend and it was an incredible turnout plus performances from the Washington Ballet and other speakers. Before you leave, don’t forget to check out the recent acquisitions and you’ll find a number of gems. Museum aside, I was so inspired by the young ballerinas that I’m returning to ballet and will take my first class in nearly 2 decades.

So. Much. To. See! Do not underestimate this museum & think you can get through it in an hour or two. To truly appreciate it, give yourself half the day, at least. Or all day, if you want to leisurely stroll or read about each piece. It is PACKED with interesting portraits & art & sculptures from many different eras & genres. Truly magnificent! And so thoughtfully organized too! Staff is friendly & helpful. A must see.

Joyful orchid exhibit in the courtyard! And an astonishing selection of works by self taught artists that could nudge your inner creator to come alive. Plus a fascinating display on the theme of justice.

Great orchid display in the courtyard. Finally got to see the Obama portraits and the Oprah portrait is there too. The Toni Morrison portrait looks like a photo....but it's an oil. Unbelievable!
