It was disappointing to see that the message of the artwork housed in this museum was not reflected in the management of this establishment. We visited on a Sunday when the board was meeting, us such the second floor was closed to the ravel and riffraff that had paid to visit the museum. Us peasants were shooed away by staff members when we dared to look on upon the visage of several portraits adjacent to the board room. A woman with what resembled an Hermes scarf wrapped tightly around her neck gave us a terrifying smile and informed us we were not where we belonged. The majority of the employees were kind and helpful, but as we navigated around the event it was apparent that the Development team would have liked us peasants to vacate the premises.

Excellent, world-class museum. First of all, it's huge. Many floors, each with curated themed exhibits, including some permanent works and some rotating collections (Hung Liu, who I love, was a featured artist when I visited). There is also a small library with books full of art and art history. The museum has collected large pieces by luminaries of the art world, like Frida Kahlo, Amy Sherald (who painted Michelle Obama's official portrait), and Yayoi Kusama. There is a wide variety of mediums, styles, and subject matters throughout the museum. I attached photos of some of the paintings I was particularly inspired by

I was not expecting to be charged in order to get in. The building is beautiful and the works of art are amazing. My favorite parts were the short documentaries on the first floor and the small library. As a student, I would go frequently there to study if it wasn't for the price.

Absolutely beautiful setting and works. The new space is just stunning. The collections are interesting and heart warming. Lots of sculpture and especially large works which I really enjoyed. A great variety of mediums. There is a short movie at the entrance on several of the artists whose work is being shown which I noticed at the end of my visit. Worth watching. The staff are cheerful and helpful. A wonderful way to spend a morning. I will definitely return. I left feeling much better than when I arrived. Highly recommend.

I've had a membership to this museum for several years. I anytime someone ask me for something to do off the mall I usually suggest this museum. It was the first place I saw an Amy Sherald painting. After that I went up to Baltimore to see more. Years later she would create the portrait for Michelle Obama. The building is currently under renovation but once it's open again I'm sure it will be spectacular.

I've photographed a dozen weddings here over the years, and it's one of my all time favorite venues in Washington DC! the architecture is incredible, and the modern art on the top floor is a fantastic space for cocktail hour and some bonus creative photos. ig @iamthesam

Any time I get to celebrate women, and their contributions to society, (besides being an incubator for the next generation), I WHOLEHEARTEDLY will! Without a f****** doubt! I think we've been conditioned that we're not truly happy until we have an ankle-biter, or two running amok in our lives. I wholeheartedly disagree!I believe this is the only museum in the country run by women, and have women artists exclusively.During our visit, we didn't get to see all the exhibits, so I'm definitely going back the next time we're in town!

The NMWA opened in 1987 as the only museum in the world dedicated to women artists. The permanent collection features artists like Lavinia Fontana, the first successful professional European artist, to Amy Sharald, now famous for painting the beloved portrait of Michelle Obama. Special exhibits over the years have included a Danish art colony, quilts, Australian Aboriginal paintings, pottery by Maria Martinez, Rodante fashion and massive cedar sculptures. The museum is temporarily closed now for major renovations.
