A great collection, thoughtful curation, and some of the best forums you can ask for at the intersection of art, culture, and policy. Why not 5-Stars? There are three stunning views of the National Mall: the Speaker’s Balcony, the top of the Capitol Dome, and the Hirshhorn Balcony - a stunning 180-view at the center of the Mall that’s not too far away or too high in the sky. The other two at the Capitol are closed to the public without a Congressional connection and/or luck. But the Hirshhorn Balcony used to be open to the public. But now it’s only for rich donors. So much for practicing what artists preach…

We were denied entrance with our service dog by two security guards. Shameful. Nasty attitude, refused to review our dog’s pass, just flat out told us we could not come inside.

Great (and free!!) modern art museum with an interesting "cylindric" architecture and a sculpture garden. While the building is very big, the visit doesn't take that much time: the different art pieces are not close to each others which enables the visitor to appreciate each piece for itself, unlike certain other museums where you are overwhelmed by the quantity of exhibitions to visit and art pieces to look at. It makes the art "breathe" which is highly appreciated.

This is an spectacular building from an arquitectural stand point which is not well used. The museum is not atractive at all. The floors are used to exposed small collections in the entire floor that makes the building look empty. It looks like behind the administrative desk there is an old person with no modern ideas taking wrong decisions about this great building poorly used.

The Hirschhorn is described as a leading world voice of contemporary art that provides a national platform for the art and artists of today and tomorrow. With thousands of art exhibits in its collection, this multi storied modern architectural marvel is brimming with art and stories awaiting your discovery. Plenty of seating, a cafe, souvenir shop, good wifi and even places to charge your phone - this is a good place to spiritually and literally recharge your batteries. Download the Hirschhorn eye, an app that, with a simple scan, provides background and interesting information about the art you are admiring. Definitely a must see!

One of my all-time favorite DC. They have some great modern exhibits there, and it's nice to have them all under one roof.

Museum is fun, colorful and lively. Art is displayed in an approachable manner and the cafe has good drinks. The chocolate cookie is to die for.

My visit to the Hirshhorn Museum was a captivating journey through modern art and sculpture. The Calder mobile exhibit was a highlight, with a jaw-dropping large mobile fixed to the ceiling at the entrance--an impressive start to our exploration. The museum's location on the national mall made it easily accessible from our hotel, and the free entry is a definite plus. However, the navigation within the museum left something to be desired. We encountered some confusion finding the floor dedicated to Calder, taking away one star from an otherwise stellar experience. The self-guided tour provided flexibility, and I appreciated the diverse activities catering to different audiences. Children's activities were in full swing, and the educational resources for teachers showcased the museum's commitment to art education.Despite the navigational hiccup, the museum's status as the most visited modern art museum in the United States is well-deserved. I only wish the museum shop matched the grandeur of the exhibits--it felt a bit small and lacked variety. More substantial art-related items would enhance the overall experience. In summary, the Hirshhorn Museum offers a rich tapestry of modern art, with minor navigation challenges and room for improvement in the museum shop. Nonetheless, it's a cultural gem in Washington, DC, providing an enriching experience for art enthusiasts.

Modern art is really hit-or-miss, and aside from a few pieces, the exhibitions this month (November 2023) were mostly misses. If you’re looking to visit, I’d recommend waiting for a new exhibit. Also, the sculpture garden is temporarily closed.

This is a really good option if you enjoy modern art in Washington DC and have 1-2 hours available. The Hirshhorn is part of the Smithsonian (which means admission is free) and provides rotating exhibits in a round building that is located between the Castle and the Air & Space Museum. I stopped here in mid-November 2023 for a quick visit. Just a few quick notes. First, the restrooms are only available on the lower ground level. Second, there's a cafe on the main lobby level if you need a coffee break. Third, I would recommend going to the upper level of the museum and previewing the exhibit there. Be sure to take a picture at the lovely window view of the Mall. Fourth, you can work your way down one floor at a time. Overall, I found this to be a good museum if you have 1-2 hours available, even though I'm not a huge fan of modern art.
