There is no other vet in DC I would trust to care for our dear, sweet, elderly basset house. We've gone to Union Vet Clinic for the last 7 years, since moving to DC. The entire staff is always so wonderful and Dr. Gross has been our trusted vet the entire time, but if ever Dr. Gross is out, we have always received wonderful care from the other Doctors on staff. I must say, sometimes it is very stressful coming in because of our dog's advanced age and not knowing what is wrong with her. But seeing the wonderful front desk staff at the clinic always makes it easier. Rebecca is always so helpful on the phone and Nesha is so sweet and always asks how our sweet girl is doing, even when I am just there solo to pick up medication. Bryce is so amazing and empathetic whenever we come in with an issue, I can tell he truly cares and he has also stayed late to help me pick up medicine. He constantly goes above and beyond to help us. And Christian the vet tech is always so tender with our sweet old girl! Union Vet Clinic is truly a family, they are incredibly skilled and compassionate and I'd recommend them to anyone he needs expert care for their furry best friends!

I adopted a rescue and chose this as my vet because it was so close to my house. They also offer waive the initial $70 visit fee for rescues. Big mistake. The initial interaction was not great - the vet tech never introduced himself (I thought he was the vet I had an appt with until the actual vet arrived) and kept forgetting information (ie, he weighed my dog and then when inputting it in the computer said "what did he weigh again?" Luckily I had been paying attention.) When the vet arrived, her bedside manner was awful. She kept asking me how I could have let his ears get so infected - keep in mind I had owned this dog for less than 24 hours, which I tried to explain repeatedly. He had indeed been neglected by his former owners but they acted like I was the one doing the neglecting. They also insisted, based on my dog's eyes, that he was 10 or 11 and that I should get him on a senior dog diet bc he was unlikely to live longer than a year or so. I know that with a rescue dog the age is always up in the air, but having had senior dogs previously I knew this dog wasn't 11. I asked them to look at his (very healthy) teeth to get a better idea and they refused, saying they could tell from the eyes. (Spoiler alert - I later took him to a different, much better vet and without giving them any of this information asked how old they thought the dog was. After looking at everything - including his teeth - they concluded he was probably around 7, which is exactly what I thought.) They also told me he had a heart murmur, which is true. After I declined to see a cardiologist "just in case he needs heart surgery" (I was sure he did not and am right so far) they insisted he needed a variety of senior dog and cardiovascular tests. I didn't think he needed the full scan of senior dog tests but agreed because if something was wrong, I of course wanted to know - better to be on the safe side. His tests came back perfectly healthy though they still sent me a suggestion last week that I take him to their cardiologist just in case. They also took forever to give me his test results and when I called to get his record a few weeks later (to take him to another vet) they sent me the records for another dog. Side note - a few years ago my friend had to put her dog down and they ended up misplacing a portion of the dog's ashes. Like, they gave her what they said were the ashes and then called months later asking when she was going to get the rest of him . She warned me not to take my dog here but they're so close that I hoped it was a one off thing. Clearly it wasn't. I am giving them two stars because they give the "free" vet visit for rescue dogs, but just be prepared for them to tell you your new dog has a host of issues you need to pay for and act like you're a terrible pet owner. ETA: I just remembered that they said his ears were in such bad shape that he would need six months of follow up appointments and medicine to clear it. I put him on the meds they recommended and took him to a different vet for the follow up, about 3 weeks later. His ears were clear (lab tested and proved). I can't help but wonder if the results would have been the same at a follow up at Union.

My yearling pup, Maddie, had a rapid onset of vomiting and bloody diarrhea that became increasingly severe on a Wednesday morning. I called my regular vet, which has two locations - both of which were closed for professional development with no means for current clients to contact any of the vets in case of emergency. So, I called around the area, hoping one could fit me in and I could avoid schlepping Maddie to an emergency animal hospital. I called Union Vet and explained my dog's symptoms. They immediately understood the urgency and offered to fit us in at noon that day. Not only were they accommodating, but Dr. Mortola and the techs were exceptional. Dr. Mortola was thorough efficient, and, most importantly, accurate in her diagnosis. She got Maddie hooked up to an IV ASAP and called me with updates. The techs were also wonderful with her, highly competent, and professional. Dr. Mortola called each day for several days after to check on Maddie and provide me with updates on any test results. She was also very clear and up front about the costs, which, given the circumstances, were quite reasonable - and certainly much easier to stomach than an emergency animal hospital. While there are a number of good vets in the area, I truly appreciate Union Vet fitting my pup in, doing their jobs very well, and being open and available when I needed them. Some of the "five star" vets in the area may have lovely offices and staff, but Union Vet proved their competency and reliability in one visit. Maddie and I will definitely be back for (hopefully less urgent) check ups.

It was 5:30 on a Friday night in the pouring rain and my dog gave me a terrible scare. My vet was closed I literally ran in the rain to Union Vet arriving around 5:45--they close at 6. They were so kind and immediately saw and took care of my dog without hesitation. They gave him the best care and put me at ease that my dog was going to be okay. I will forever be grateful to Union Vet for taking such great care of my dog. Thank you!

Vets are expensive, but as far as Union Vet goes you definitely get what you pay for. I have been going to Union Vet for a few years now. About 2 years ago my cat got very sick and needed emergency surgery. Union Vet was amazing. They laid out all of my options and let me choose. I did not feel pressured to spend money on something I did not want to, which I know can sometimes be an issue at vets. Furthermore, they are open 7 days a week and understand that people have busy schedules. They also offer walk in appointments (for a higher price) if you cant get an appointment/need to come in ASAP.

After Dr. Katz left, the service went completely downhill. The front desk staff is not helpful, and when my dog sees the docs, I feel like they're ordering tests that are unnecessary. I've been taking my dog there for eight years, and it's sad I have to go find somewhere else to take her.

I've been bringing my little fur-baby, Pippa, here for about two years. We always have a positive experience with the front desk staff, vets, and vet assistant. They even scheduled me in for a an appointment within a day of me calling and are open on Sunday morning! I have an especially anxious little baby who hates when new people touch her. So getting vaccinations and test run is extremely challenging for her. Nonetheless, the vet and his assistant were very calm, understanding of her anxiety, and very gentle with my little one. You can really tell that they care about the animals with the way they talk to them and try to calm their anxiety.

Loving, compassionate team who cares about my dog and making things easy for me. My dog and I have had great care over the past 8 years, both routine and emergency. We recently had an annual check-up with Dr. Cohen, and when I shared my worries about his aging, she was extremely compassionate. She has consistently helped us keep my pup happy and healthy in an affordable way. And the front desk staff is great when I need my dog's vaccination records sent to boarding facilities and such. Thanks Union Vet!

I think it speaks really highly of Union that our puppy literally drags me in there every time we walk past - and the front desk staff are always happy to give pets and treats when we do stop by. We've seen three different vets there and a number of different vet techs, and they have all been wonderful. We adopted our puppy without really planning to, and scrambled to get his vaccines and basic care figured out. Not only did they guide us through the early days and what to expect, but the puppy package is a steal! $200 for all basic puppy vaccines, 3 fecal tests, and 4 exams (and at the time we started, they had a rescue discount)! This was our backup plan after the first vet we picked couldn't schedule an appointment for weeks, and I'm so glad we ended up here. Sebastian gives it 5 stars!

Union Vet is absolutely awful. I would recommend taking your pets anywhere other than to Union Veterinary Clinic. We have 3 pets -- 2 cats and 1 dog. We'd been customers at Union Vet for years, but it's taken a nosedive and they couldn't care less. The 5-star & 4-star reviews you see here are either years old, or written by the doting family members of current Union Vet employees. Don't be fooled. Upon meeting their terrible front desk staff, you'll immediately wonder if you made the right decision in booking your appointment at this place -- spoiler, yes, you did make the wrong decision. The front desk is rude, wait times are long (long!), parking is non-existant. All of that has actually always been the case, but their doctors used to make up for it. Once Dr. Kats left though, that also changed. Just yesterday morning Union Vet charged me a premium price for a urinalysis--nearly twice as much as other (better) clinics. Nearly 48 hours later, we have no results for our little puppy, and the front desk staff is telling us that the results were sent to the doctor and that we'll just have to wait for a call -- and that it will "probably be tomorrow." That's after they inspected a chipped tooth, confidently told us that it would require surgery, and referred us to offices wanting to charge upwards of $1200 for a tooth-pull. We visited 2 more vets, both laughed at their "expertise". Thank goodness we did, our little girl's tooth fell out just last week -- her mouth is doing great! No $1200 surgery, lol thanks for the advice, Union Vet. Long story short: spend your money elsewhere. These folks charge FAR more than their competitors, and they do not care about you. We've left forever. Our 3 pets are seeing other vets, in better, more comfortable facilities, for a fraction of the cost. I could not give this place a worse review. Please, do yourself a favor: Don't Go To Union Vet EDIT 7.26.2018: Just received a call from Union Vet's manager--note that this is 2 days after the original post, where it had already been close to 48 hours. Our dog has gone for over 3 days without a diagnosis from them, and on this call--instead of providing a diagnosis--they were combative, insisting that they did call (except they didn't have our phone number down correctly, despite us spending money there for years with multiple pets). Just go to Capitol Hill Animal Clinic .com. Don't deal with these clowns. They also delete negative reviews from their Facebook page. Laughable, if your pets lives weren't in their hands.

Deeply compassionate vets who were so kind to us when we had to put our cat down. I will not forget how well they treated us before, during and after that sad day. We've had dental care, boarding and emergency care done here too. They're our go-to for a reason.

This place is growing on me. Prices are not cheap, but I suppose I'm hostage to what's close by... And if there wasn't this option, the travel alone would make vet cost worst... So I will say the cost is on the high side of reasonable. But, you can find yourself waiting a long time if you come during a rush; I sat for an hour waiting when I had an appointment and showed early and checked in. I'm not counting the time I waited almost an hour due to an emergency case that came in. The front desk staff can seem either unduly overwhelmed or oblivious, maybe both; there are a plethora of people working there, and two people at the front desk, so it boggles me. Having said these negativish things, I have received what matters most... good treatment from the doctors. There are clearly ways this business could improve, but the core function is intact... So I optimistically give five stars. BUT I will definitely come back and knock this down a star if I have to endure another half-hour plus no-reason-wait. For instance, another time the staff didn't communicate so the front didn't know my script and instructions were ready, which also happened once. Bottom line - You get GOOD CARE from the vets, but the price can be a bit premium, and the support service a source of frustration.

Very reasonably priced, professional and prompt service. They gave me the best price in town for health checkup and certificate. It was very convenient to communicate through yelp messages. More professionalism than in other vet clinics I tried. So far the best.

We started here in 2006...Always a very pleasant experience. You can tell that they genuinely care about your pet. There are a lot of very kind, helpful and humble/respectful (no attitude) people at this vet practice. My cats do not like getting shots, and they all go out of their way, and work really hard together as a team to gently handle my cats shots and examination (my cats will fight them, and they pony up and put on gloves and handle it like magicians). They are both very kind & gentle to the pets and to the pet parents. Rebecca at front desk/receptionist has been there, what seems like a pretty long time, and she has always been very patient, gracious and understanding with all my concerns (about dental procedures) & (all my changes in appointment) scheduling. Dr Gross has been a truly wonderful and caring vet. I had my cats neutered here, which went very, very well, as well as a total of (4) dental cleaning/extractions on my (2) cats over the years, and again, no issues, and also really fair prices; one cat needed (6) teeth extracted, and I could tell he was going to need them, b/c (2) of his teeth were very loose and almost about to pop out anyway, and the final price of the bill was a lot lower than I expected it to be. They genuinely seemed concerned and to really care about my pets, I have always felt. I have boarded my cats here years ago, when I needed to for about 1 week, and again, no issues at all, and my cats appeared to be really well tended to; and they took the time to baby them, as they kept me posted on them, and how they would play with them, and let them walk around and hang out, when I called to check on them. I am willing to drive all the way clear across town to go here, b/c I know that they will treat me, and my cats with very much the utmost in both care and concern. I don't ever mind waiting for an appointment, b/c I know that there are unexpected emergencies that they are I am sure dealing with, taking care of the needs of other people's pets, with the same care & concern as they do with my own...I have recommended people to go here, and they were just as happy with the treatment and services they received on their dogs/cats.
