A really cool little museum hidden in Georgetown. They had some really cool artifacts including a really intriguing exhibit on pre-Colombian meso American stuff, including a bunch of really cool masks. There was also a massive and beautiful music room that looked like it had remained untouched for over a century if not longer. I totally recommend seeking this place out.

Wonderful exhibits. One of the best hidden secret museums in the DC area.

A small museum north of Georgetown. With an interesting collection of Byzantine and pre-Columbian art. And beautiful gardens. The museum is free. Not the garden.

Interesting Byzantine and Pre-Colimbian collections. Only a very small fraction of either collection is on display. Informative, yet succinct placards keep the flow moving and you're not stuck in a massive queue as slow readers... hold up the whole line. The music room can be viewed from two distinct vantages, so, pick up the key reference guide, orient yourself accordingly, and then go to the other side and flip your key reference guide over. Unfortunately, the timing of my visit and the weather conditions were not conducive to a view of the outdoor grounds, but it looked great through the windows. Also, remember that Doaks is a site of much scholarship and translation of texts, as well, as it is affiliated with Harvard University.

One of the best-kept secrets in Georgetown! This free museum (not to be confused with the gardens around the corner, which require advanced tickets) has an incredible array of ancient Roman, Byzantine, and central American artifacts, as well as a beautiful library and the historically significant Music Room, where the UN charter was signed. A great place to spend an afternoon!

The museum is somewhat sparsely populated with artifacts. What is on display tends to be interesting and well-explained by the signs in the exhibits. If I had to criticize the museum, I would say that it can take some effort to ascertain which caption applies to which artifact because of the imperfectly aligned schematics of the artifacts and captions in many displays. Definitely worth a visit for tourists and locals alike.

My visit to Dumbarton Oaks Museum was an enriching and captivating experience that offered a glimpse into the world of art, history, and culture. Nestled within the serene surroundings of Georgetown in Washington, D.C., this hidden gem is home to a remarkable collection of Byzantine and pre-Columbian art, as well as exquisite gardens and stunning architecture.

Lovely, free museum! Has a neat glass wall exhibit room and an ornate, cozy library. Employees are very kind and welcoming, and happy to answer any questions. Their hospitality made a small museum worth the visit.

This is one of the best museums in DC, and there’s a lot of museums in DC. The building itself is beautiful to be in and they have blended the older house with the new gallery space amazingly. There’s Roman and Byzantine art, textiles, jewelry, coins, and more. However, my favorite part is the several rooms displaying South and MesoAmerican pre-contact art. I am always astounded by how bright and crisp the colors look on pottery that’s 2000 years old, and how technically difficult some of the pieces must have been to create. We are lucky that these masterpieces have survived to this day and we can admire them in such a wonderful museum.

Highly recommend , it has spectacular pieces of Roman, pre-Columbian and Byzantine art and the environments where they are exposed with glass walls with nature behind are phenomenal. Admission is free and there is parking on the street. Be sure to visit the gardens for which depending on the season you do have to buy tickets online but they are worth it

Always good for a lovely day out, with sweeping lawns and manicured grounds.
Some tips: if driving, parking on the museum side is usually a good bet. If you live in the DMV and plan on several visits through the summer, buy the season pass for $75 and you bypass the timed entry system at the door. (Particularly if you, like me, find you can only visit on a whim on otherwise sold out dates) It goes to support the museum so worth it either way.

It's a beautiful place. The music room is the most beautiful.
