I have been a Citibank customer since the 1990s, and opened up a business account a few years ago. I recently tried to open a custodial account for my 14-year-old daughter at the branch on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, DC. My daughter just wanted an account she could keep a few hundred dollars in, and occasionally use to purchase things online. The process was almost comically complex--we spent at least 2 hours sitting at a desk at the Citibank branch at 5700 Connecticut Avenue, watching multiple agents try--and ultimately fail--to give us the one thing we had come in to get. They'd say one thing--and another would be true. They'd say they'd taken care of it--and they had not. It was absurd--even the branch manager was incompetent. My daughter is a teenager and will be using banks for the rest of her life--she will never, ever bank at Citibank again. And if it hadn't been so hard to open my business account--another long story of incompetence at a different Citibank branch--I would also be closing my account.

Changed banks because I was told about all of the things that they’d provide that my bank didn’t, without extra fees. Two months and multiple long visits later (bank doesn’t answer so you have to speak with the 800 number, and they can’t answer the account questions, so they refer you to physical branch), the accounts weren’t even set up right, didn’t have the functionality we needed, and fees were higher than last bank. A manager that doesn’t work there called to try and sort things out and apologized for the issues, but I explained that it was too little too late. Branch manager clearly cared less, no comments when I closed the accounts. Rest of staff was perfectly lovely.
