Friendly staff and way better prices than giant down the street. They have a huge selection of groceries. They’re my preferred grocery store.

Solid place. Prices are really great in comparison but they don’t list all of them so take that with a grain of salt. Some Kirkland brand items if you like Costco

Indispensable neighborhood market with any food essentials you’d need, all reasonably priced, and more. Fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, beverages, cereal, canned goods — they have just about everything. What makes this place great is its Ethiopian and Middle Eastern staples - lentils, flat breads, tahini, spices, teas, even hookah supplies and incense. Great shop, never had a bad experience in 3 years of going there.

They don't put a size and price tag in their merchandise especially on their imported foodstuff and the cashiers have no clue about price, so they charge you as they guess. There is a lot of expired stuff on their shelves. Be aware of the best by and expiration dates of their stuff.

Black Lion is a wonderful market in Columbia Heights. My habesha partner and her mom love it for the good selection of items from home they can get: multiple types of injera, quanta, coffee, and other tasty treats. There's also several housewares available that are used in coffee ceremonies. The market also carries a solid array of produce, drinks, and dry goods. Prices are reasonable for a corner market like this. Staff are super friendly and often help locate items if they're not readily available on the shelf. In short, this is a great habesha market to visit if you're in DC, especially if you don't have the time or transportation to get to one of the bigger markets in Arlington.

What a sad place . I couldnt get waited on let alone ask any questions about the food items i wanted to purchase.I believe it was because im an out LGBTQA person. I could feel the vibe they were sending to me when they saw me walk into the store. That I was not welcomed there. They simply refused to acknowledge me . And when I ask why they were acting this way they just smiled.Life is to short to spend money where they dont want you to. What a sad representation for there store. There are so many other markets to go to , avoid this one.

I went there to make a purchase and the cashier was very nice to me. My only complaint is there are no price stickers on items.

This is a dream of a market. From injera, to berbere blends and shiro wot powders, you can get everything you need for a great evening meal. I'm sad to hear that some people left negative reviews due to lack of staff or unpriced merchandise. No price will surprise you; it's all market rate or slightly below. I found most of the spices by the pound as well as teff were $1 less than similar markets in Silver Springs just up the road. What a gem.

Lot of interesting products, I can see what others say about some disorganization but you have to expect this and take it for what it is, a place to get things you can't find anywhere else.

I bought Ethiopian flat bread (injera) imported from Ethiopia-Letena and Nafkot brands. I returned the spoiled Letena and got Nafkot which I was told was fresh. Took it home and found out it was spoiled too. Yeshagete. Will never go to this store again.

There are no price stickers on any products so you don't know how much things are until you checkout. Some of their stuff are expired or near the expiration date. Watch out for items with rips and holes in the packaging. I only come when I really need something I cant find at Giant. It's expensive so I would not recommend, especially if you shop with a budget.
