Afrik International Foods is the only African market in Washington, DC, conveniently located near the metro. It offers a variety of unique items essential for cooking local Nigerian dishes, including stockfish and ogiri Igbo. Customers particularly enjoy the spicy, ripe plantain chips, although some have noted that the peanuts can be less fresh. The market has a limited selection of imported items but provides a range of meat options at good prices and quality. While the selection of fresh produce is limited, the store is clean and well-organized, with professional staff. Many appreciate the friendly service, including helpful gestures like providing plastic bags for moist meat purchases. Although parking can be a challenge in DC, the store is accessible for those without cars. It is recommended for anyone needing simple African ingredients and is recognized as one of the few Black-owned shops in Union Market. Store hours are standard, closing at 5 PM, with the fresh meat section closing earlier at 4:30 PM. Overall, Afrik International Foods is a valuable resource for African food needs in the area.
Came for turkey for a stew I was making. Limited selection of imported items but it’s the only place in the city I know that has west African merchandise.
