Visited REI last year to purchase hiking boots and was helped by a friendly staff member. Returned this year to buy a pack for a multi day trip and that same friendly staff member, Will, helped us once again. He spent quality time going over what options each pack provided and fitting the backpack to my husband. Would highly recommend visiting this store and if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask.

I have had some friendly interactions with some if the staff, but highly dissatisfied with the bike service department.
I brought my bike in for a tune-up at the end of April, paying over $200. I finally started riding in July and noticed several issues. The bike was dirty in all the crevices, despite being told it would be thoroughly cleaned. The rear tire valve was broken, and the front tube, which I brought it in for, still had a leak. The brakes were adjusted so tightly that the wheel wouldn't spin freely. My husband and I had to spend 45 minutes replacing tubes and adjusting the brakes ourselves.
Additionally, I asked an associate for help with my Thule bike rack, as I had never used it alone before. The associate seemed annoyed and gave almost no guidance on how to properly attach it for a safe drive home.
Overall, I'm not sure what I paid for.

Normally a fan of REI, but this store needs to do some quality control. I placed an online order for store pick up for 4 items. My closest store is actually in RI (1 hour away), but I had someone passing through West Hartford (1.5 hours away), so I had him pick it up for me.
1 box (Yakima HD bars) was crushed on one side (fortunately, the item is fine, but crazy to have a crushed box when picking up from a store).
Another box was clearly opened and re-taped (Skyline towers). Turns out the torque wrench provided is broken so now I have to go out of my way to exchange it.
Another box (Landing pads) looked fine, but the parts bag was ripped opened so the screws were loose in the box. Not to mention the actual pieces were clearly used and covered in debris/dirt.
I can't believe I spent almost $600 on 4 items at this store for used/broken items that were supposed to be brand new. Fortunately, I can exchange at a different store. Lessoned learned. I'll be avoiding the West Hartford store going forward.

Never shop here!!! They are racist especially Moody! He is rude and lacks customer service skills and etiquette. He will attempt to “threaten” to bar you from the store and refuse your business (by phone) without just cause when his logic is full of holes. They will try to upcharge for unnecessary work. A report has been filed with REI Corporate Office for the New Britain Ave, West Hartford CT location. Shop here at your own risk.

I left my skis with them and they said they would be done at 10:30 the next day and then they ended up being closed and it was the first time it snowed the next day

REI is a great place in general, but this particular location is really great. All categories are well stocked, both assortment and size. Staff members are really knowledgeable and willing to understand your preferences to help you pick the right product. Not uncommon to have multiple staff members involved in offering an opinion on trail shoes or higher end gear. Product quality is, across the board, great. I’ve only ever had to return something once (no problems), but was well aware of their no hassle return policy. It’s about a 40 minute drive for me, so I don’t drop by as often as I’d like, but always worth a drop in. Parking can get a bit hectic in this lot at times with Shake Shak right nearby too, but not a big deal. Easy on/off I-84! If you’re not a member of the REI Co-op, you should be.

Very cramped but nice store. Too expensive for what I needed.
