If you're looking for an Asian market this is the place to go. And if you're looking to make an Asian dish it is the place to go. From your Meats fish and produce. Different types of product and a good price.

ORIGIN: A Dong Supermarket opened in 1989 to serve the Hartford area community. CONCEPT: A Dong Supermarket gathers and sells ingredients and tools used in east and southeast Asian cooking, many of which are hard to find elsewhere in the area. LOCATION: The supermarket is located in a strip mall tucked behind New Britain Avenue. The strip mall, known as Shield Street Plaza, has several other noteworthy destinations for foods that are uncommonly found in Connecticut (e.g. Coracora Peruvian restaurant, Cha Papi cafe). The supermarket interior is no frills, warehouse-like, but that is part of the charm. EXPERIENCE: A Dong Supermarket is large, with wide, bare fluorescent bulb-lit aisles devoted to different ingredients, including fish, herbs, sweets, and rice. Since the supermarket sells ingredients that are critical to many different Asian countries, A Dong Supermarket is a place for anyone to discover and try unfamiliar culinary components. While ideal place for one stop shopping for Asian ingredients, it is also an ideal destination for those looking to extend their culinary repertoire and try ingredients that are completely unfamiliar. As one example of the culinary adventure that is in store for customers, I entered to purchase fresh mint to add to a new dish I had prepared, and left with a somewhat familiar-looking mint (water mint), as well as a type that was unfamiliar (fish mint). These herbs were retrieved from a large pile of small shrink wrapped packages of herbs on a shelf. Rifling through the pile only added to the sense of coming upon a treasure chest, and will surely add a novel flavor to the dish. Similarly, a walk over to the grain aisle invited discovery of a stray package of "rhubarb rice". Had no idea what this was, but placed it in my shopping cart. Unlike when I shopped in NYC's Asian markets in the 20th century, with wider export and use of Asian ingredients today most items are at very least described in English somewhere on the label. (The store name itself is described in Vietnamese and English on the exterior entrance sign.) That said, you are still unlikely to find preparation instructions in English ... but that is part of the sense of discovery the store invites to all customers! TIPS: A Dong Supermarket is open 9 AM to 7 PM each day. A small collection of prepared food is also available, but food and drink must be eaten outside of the supermarket, and there is no seating outside.

Largest Asian market in the area. It's gotten much better and cleaner over the years.Pretty good selection of prepared food, a lot of meat and fish selection, great selection of fresh produce, more Ramen and rice thatn you can shake a stick at, lots of snacks and other Asian goodness. It's a bit of a drive for most, but when you buy in bulk, it makes it worth the drive once a month or so.

A Dong is one of my favorite grocery stores in the area! They have an amazing assortment of vegetables and fruit that you just can't get anywhere else. I love their snack and drink sections, which allows me to try different items! I highly recommend picking up some of their pastries and bread, such as the hot dog bun and roast pork buns. It's a large store with many workers who are able to provide support if you need it in a variety of languages! This is a staple!

A Dong Asian Supermarket is a fascinating and massive store that is a haven for lovers of Asian cuisine. If you're confident in your cooking skills and don't need any hand-holding while shopping, this place is perfect for you. The variety of produce, sauces, noodles, ramen, sweets, cookware, and more is impressive, and the prices won't leave you feeling like you just sold a kidney. The store is decently organized and clean, so you won't have to wade through piles of discarded packaging to find what you need. However, don't expect any frills or pleasantries from the staff - they're not exactly falling over themselves to assist you. But if you're just looking to grab some quality Asian staples and get on with your day, A Dong Asian Supermarket is definitely worth a visit.

Let's start by saying I absolutely love the tea section. They have all kinds of teas and supplements. The produce section is absolutely filled every time I go in the supermarket. I love their ginger so good ?. Want to find fresh fish come to this place. There is a little bit of everything, which I truly enjoy. I am very diverse and I love to try new things. The only thing I have to say is that they should be a bit cleaner but overall supermarket is well supplied.

Torn between 3-4 stars, yes it’s not the best but hey it’s one of the few big Asian supermarkets around with the largest selection. Weekend is rather busy so if possible, go on weekdays. Use your best judgement on picking out what’s fresh and what’s not, especially for things like veggies and bakery. More likely that it’ll be fresh weekend time. The best is the roast duck/pork/chicken, reasonably priced and delicious! Bakery is just ok, fruits and veggies is your typical Asian things. We come here once a week for groceries, noodles, etc. Parking is easy, huge parking lot. If there’s another competing Asian supermarket this big, I’m sure they’ll step up their game but without much competition, it’s kind of run down.

Great produce selection! This supermarket is awesome if you want to get fresh produce that is great quality for a good price. They have a large selection of snacks, fish, and pre-made food. The isles in the store are on the smaller side so it does feel a little crowded if there's more than a few people in the isle. Employees were friendly and there's a lot of parking.

I haven't been shopping at this place as often as like before, due to some reasons that I think it's unfair to the consumers. For example, I used to buy some Thai basil leaves that'd been packed, when I got home and unpacked it. There were big stems hidden under those basil leaves which made its weight was heavier on the stem to make it higher price per pack. Another example that I recently notices and completely stopping buying it for good is ground pork. I was impressed by the price that ground pork was so cheap at this store, $1.99/lb at that time (but right now that price is going up but not much), and here the reason why. I also noticed that the ground pork in the package looked so different from Stop and Shop, Shoprite, or other grocery store. It looks soggy, mushy when it touches the plastic wrap. However, I didn't really care at that time since it was cheap, and it didn't effect on my cooking that much. After that (I'm not really sure when it started getting worse because I stopped buying it long time ago,) I purchased again and cooked some preserved sour pork, and this time I realized this was something wrong with the pork, it was giving too much excessive water because the ground pork had been added a lot of water in it in order to make it weighs more than actual pork content, and I answered myself why the ground pork at A Dong is cheaper than other places. Well, there's more things that I don't want to write more since the comment is already too long. In conclusion, I don't buy things at A Dong much anymore if I can find it some where else. Moreover, the prices of things there are sky rocket.

Never gets old coming here. About 1x per month I get my fix of frozen soup dumplings, gyoza, and a prepared small box of duck OR crispy pork. Always must refresh on some noodles. I will say that there's some national shortage of SAMBAL and chili garlic because the shelves were WIPED clean of all! And unavailable at stop and shop or Whole Foods. Always affordable and even scored a 6pk of quail.

I've become a regular at A Dong since my first review in 2013. I notice many people spouting very entitled, classist rhetoric about how the grocery store should change. I don't want a remodel that will force the store to again have to bump up prices to pay for it. I know A Dong has had to raise prices on some things due to inflation (I don't fault them for that) and I would much prefer the building keep its personality and lower prices than simply look up to date to please rich people who are not paying for it and don't care about the consequences to others for having to pay for it. They don't care because they don't feel it. They just want it to smell Westernized and look more like Target. THEN GO TO TARGET. A Dong a great spot. Don't let image deter you from the quality they offer. I prefer higher quality produce and goods than new floors. The floors work just fine! My first review is still accurate and very detailed if you want to learn more about A Dong.
