I’ve been to multiple doctors in CT. This place has doctors who actually care and want to help you. The staff is always fantastic, kind and welcoming. Not for nothing but the staff also plays good music in the waiting room.

my experience at anchor health has led me to become disillusioned with the idea that doctors are nice, caring people who are willing to listen to my concerns. the office itself is clean and nice looking when you eventually realize that the entrance is accessed at the side of the building facing parking instead of the front door like people who arrived on foot or by bus may assume.
i saw doctor Canarie for my medical transition for a time, once in person and other appointments were Telehealth. my first appointments went well except the occasional weird comments about the “curves” that i would be developing because of the estrogen i was prescribed, that reminded me of the way creepy high school boys would talk about girls bodies. these comments were not mentioned on his after visit summary’s that other than these comments were comprehensive. this bothered me but i ignored it since the feminization of my body was the focus of our appointments, so i just explained it to my self as me not liking men talking about my body.please note that i am a minor.
everything was well until me and the doctor had a disagreement that i will not be disclosing on google. on the following appointment after that disagreement the doctor decided to subtly threaten the discharge of me from the practice and my hormone therapy because i didn’t want to give him information on my mental health services. i guess he felt i wasn’t taking the threat seriously so he plain out said if i didn’t comply with his demands i would be discharged. i said ok and that i would like to be discharged. he said that i did not want that, completely ignoring what i said i wanted. the appointment ended and he called my mother to make a appointment and tried to get her to sign papers that would allow him to talk to my mental health services, this call completely ignored my wishes and the doctor own threat of discharge.
on the last appointment when confronted about his comment of me not wanting to be discharged being inappropriate and blind to my expressed wishes he first Dodges the issue talking about something else as if he was cosplaying a politician being asked about a controversial issue. when redirected to the issue at hand he said he told me that to “challenge” me on what i wanted. i’ve worked at a restaurant as a server and when someone says they want a burger, i wouldn’t tell them they want spaghetti. my doctor should not “challenge” me on having a burger if i say i want a burger and was threatened with getting a burger.
my last complaint about that last appointment is when i said i wanted to go back to my higher dose of estrogen that was previously prescribed because i felt better on that dose, he talked to my mother saying that he as a doctor promised to “do no harm” and because my blood test showed higher levels of estrogen than average there was no evidence of benefit from having a higher dose and that adults made tantrums when they didn’t get the dose they wanted in a joking manner. this completely ignored what i said about feeling better on my previous dose and made me feel like was being compared to a adult tantrum. all this while he had discontinued the comprehensive after vist summary’s that had previously gave me peace of mind that my appointments were a joint effort towards my medical and that i was heard. the absence of this further made me distrust doctor canarie, when i was totally ignored when i brought up the absence TWICE, i lost all faith that i was a respected patient.
i had thought of giving two stars because this is the only practice i knew of giving care for gender transition and HIV prevention in the area, but when i took a break from typing i thought of this quote “if the only toilet in ten miles is full of feces, it is not a golden throne, it is a toilet full of feces” which is too say that while you might need to get care at anchor health stamford branch for your transition or sexual health because it’s harder to get it elsewhere, i must acknowledge

I came into Anchor Health trying to find any one, anything to help me with my journey through my gender identity - I had been running around, trying to get referrals to Endocrinologists, being put on wait lists, etc. - rest assured, I found everything I was looking for and needing here. This is a phenomenal practice that CARES. I feel safe, heard, and I was immediately given the life saving care I needed. I could not be more grateful for this wonderful place, or the wonderful people that work here. I cannot wait to continue my journey and become my true self with the assistance of passionate, kind individuals.

I would give them 6 stars if I could the only downside is you have to wait months to get an appointment

I cannot thank the folks at Anchor enough for the work they do in LGBTQ health and the community. I was a patient from when they first opened to when I moved last year and wish I had a queer health center like this where I live now.

Love them. Bust rest assured every-time you call the office you will be on hold for 10 or more minutes which is rather ridiculous for a medical practice.

Anchor Health Initiative (AHI) is a lifesaver, no kidding! I was referred here for Hormone Replacement Therapy, despite already having an HRT doctor, because while my former provider was well meaning and willing to learn, her experience with transgender guy patients was extremely limited. After a frustrating first year of HRT, coming to AHI felt like a dream come true. Being transgender, there are not many healthcare facilities that are truly inclusive to the core. Many practices are well meaning and try to be LGBTQ+ friendly, but there's a difference between "trying" and "being". AHI is a multispecialty practice by & for the LGBTQ+ community, specifically. *That* is where you'll notice the difference. Respecting your name, pronouns, & your chosen terms for your body come standard here. No more reminding the staff every time you see them what's going on, because great care is placed in regards to respecting patients' identity. They're also multi-specialty. They offer inclusive reproductive care, primary care, informed consent HRT, PrEP, HIV/AIDS care, psychiatric services, an onsite pharmacy and more. It's super convenient to be able to have an appointment with my HRT doc or psychiatrist, then any prescriptions are quickly and automatically sent to their own pharmacy. The pharmacy does next day mail-order Rx through UPS. Getting prescriptions is super easy and painless, as is getting an appointment virtually or in office. Living close to an hour away from the actual practice, I do all of my healthcare appointments via telehealth (video). If I need to do bloodwork, they partner with Quest Diagnostics, so all I have to do is stop by a Quest before my bloodwork requiring appointment. Like I said, it's super easy to do. The staff, like I said, is extremely LGBTQ+ inclusive, and many of the staff are LGBTQ+ themselves. If you're sick of being treated as "less than" by your doctors, this place is worth a try. I guarantee you'll like it. They also take most insurances, including Medicaid.

Went there a couple years back and got prescribed testosterone immediately they didn't ask many questions. My main problem is that they will prescribe testosterone or estrogen to anyone not knowing their background. I was dealing with abuse and trauma issues from childhood making me think I was transgender when I wasn't. Im now in the process of detransitionioning and the doctor I'm seeing now (not here) told me I am unable to reverse everything. I was not told that when I started. Now im stuck with body hair and a voice change which is irreversible

I have consistently been impressed with every level of care I have received at AHI over the past year. The receptionist is always warm and extremely helpful. The pharmacy is professional, personable, available to answer questions and ships my medications directly to me. My APRN, Sharon Alkerstedt is affirming, clearly explains test results, extremely thorough, and a joy to interact with. I highly recommend AHI to anyone in the LGBTIA+ community. Having been a patient at other LGBTQ focused practices in Connecticut I can say with confidence the AHI is by far the best.

I can always count on Anchor Health to be there for my needs. Their providers and staff are incredibly accommodating and clearly care about the patients. I feel cared for, listened to, and not judged every time I am there or call to make an appointment. Anyone looking for comprehensive non-judgmental care, Anchor Health should be your choice!

AHI is the best primary care office I've ever been a patient of. I have been seen by many of their providers and have always felt comfortable and that my concerns were being listened to. There is absolutely no judgement or shaming and it is easy to feel comfortable and respected while visiting the office. Both the patient representatives and clinical staff are highly responsive and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend!
