I hate to do yet another negative review, and i hate it even more that this is now the only mom and pop art store left in New haven with ACS' untimely demise. The prices there are jacked, and top dollar. They claim to have discounts available but it just barely covers state taxes. If you're not a rich artist, it will feel like you're being judged in rolls-royce dealership for trying to buy a car in a t-shirt and pajamas. The staff are rude and will snarl and sneer at you. I'd rather just drive to Blick or order online.

When I entered the store I was asked if I needed help with anything and I had stated politely I didn’t need help. I came with my partner(non black man) and friend (black woman) to wait for them to make their purchases. I was asked two additional times if I needed help and was watched as I walked through the store. This wouldn’t have necessarily been an issue if the store was larger and I hadn’t already answered the question but in addition to being asked multiple times at one point the person behind the counter, clearly started cleaning the glass case to watch me stand in the paint aisle. This experience felt incredibly rude and disrespectful and uncomfortable, so I proceeded to not pick up or touch anything as I knew what was already being assumed of me through this “seemingly inconspicuous” course of actions. As a black man, I did not appreciate this atmosphere and regardless of intention these actions were unsettling and rude.

From an amateur calligrapher's perspective, Hull's completely exceeded my expectations for what an art store could offer. I have particularly liked their selection of paper (Rhodia, Claire Fontaine, Leuchtturm), fountain pens (Lamy, Faber-Castell, Kaweco), and inks (Diamine, Lamy, some others I can't recall). They also carry Blackwing pencils and their accessories, letting you see the edition's boxes before purchasing. A

So I honestly love Hull's Art Supply. I typically go there to purchase items for friend's children who have an interest in art. I dabbled in drawing many moons ago but never pursued it wholeheartedly. But if I were to ever pursue drawing passionately, Hull's would be my go to for sure! They are friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. I tend to spend more than I plan when I head there

Hull's looks small from the outside, but it is packed with just about any kind of professional artist supply you may want or need. I was able to pick up a couple of items that I cannot find where I live and the prices were reasonable. The staff is helpful and friendly and we'll be certain to visit again when we are in New Haven.

Great selection of supplies for any medium and skill level, and the staff is very friendly, helpful, and knowledgable. I started coming here recently as I've been getting back into doing art as a hobby, and they are always happy to answer my questions and point me to right type of paper, pencils, and anything else I need for the projects I had in mind. Good prices too especially with their free membership card.
