I walked into this store today and had a "pretty woman" moment! Was not very dressed up ( as I rarely am) I started to look around when the woman working in the store came up to me and said " there is a sale rack in the back" ! I thought WHAT! ( I could actually buy the entire store v easily) at the time I had 2 or 3 items that I was ready to buy but as soon as she insulted me I walked out!! DONT EVER ASSUME! , you never know, will never shop in this store again?

A true classy independent gentleman’s clothing store with approachable price points, well appointed show room and unmatched service. A mini Richard’s or Mitchell’s but in truly authentic and historic town which is primarily riff raff free. I always visit when staying at Griswald inn on my annual River Trips.

Excellent service and tremendous help; James is a first-class merchant; I opened him up for the clothing line I sold him. I was charmed by the town and very impressed by the store. Absolutely LOVE J. Alden and make it a point to stop in every time I'm in Essex. Jim, the owner, is wonderful, and Sandra, one of his lovely sales associates, has become a friend through our many visits to the store. They offer beautiful, high-quality, and unique, yet classic, clothing. The personalized service is sincere and unparalleled - it's like shopping with a friend who also happens to be a stylist. Even my husband who couldn't care less about fashion, has become a fan and always manages to find pieces to bring home. Next time you're in the area, please stop in. You won't be disappointed!

J Alden Clothiers is a small clothing boutique owned by husband and wife duo Jim and Amy. The store is located on Main Street in Essex.When I walked inside I was greeted by Amy, she was so kind and welcoming. The front of the store had the most adorable red and white merchandise with hearts, in preparation for Valentine's Day! The back of the store had the men's section. Here they will taylor shirts and trousers to your fit.I really liked a lot of the tops and small accessories in this finely catered boutique. Some of the items are a bit too costly.J Alden is a beautiful family owned boutique. There is something here for everyone.

J. Alden is a local institution here in Essex. Amy & Jim know their customers by name and cater to their needs - with a smile. We bought our home in Essex over 10 years ago - I've purchased EVERY item of clothing (and many gifts) at J. Alden since then. Other shops come and go, but J. Alden carries-on in fine style (at reasonable prices). You'll be amazed at their selection and good old-fashioned customer service!

PLEASE SHOP LOCAL! I needed to send an annoymous gift to a friend of mine to brighten her day. I called the store ordered the dress and asked for the dress to be overnighted, the owner offered to hand deliver the dress. This level of service does not happen anywhere. The store is gorgeous, has beautiful unique pieces that you don't see on everyone else and is an exceptional place to shop. With all the craziness in the world there are still amazing people in the world. They are the owners of this store!
