Yet another bizarre historic inland home/museum built by another questionable artsy “one hit wonder” historical figure only important in Connecticut. Homes like this is why people from other countries laugh at Americans. Its only saving grace is its proximity to New England shoreline. Probably something that should have been built out west where the loose culture and zoning are fully accepting of something like this.

Absolutely worth the visit. Get to see a great part of the state driving there and the castle is a sight to behold!

A beautiful old-fashioned castle. Unfortunately it is not open when we visited on Monday afternoon. I guess the castle is closed in winter season. We enjoyed walking around the castle and walked down the river

A wonderful little spot to learn about the area and go hiking. Family friendly and nice daytime activity. Not open in the winter. It is only 3 seasons.

A very beautiful place, you can see a large lake, that large impressive castle.Located in one of the highest parts of the Connecticut River, the castle was originally a private residence commissioned and designed by William Gillette, an American actor famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes.

The tickets to get inside the castle were sold out on Saturday, which was a bummer. But nevertheless, it was still a great experience to view the castle from the outside. There seems to be much more than the castle as well, as trails and views of the water are available too. The structure of the castle itself is quite amazing and you can capture some awesome shots. The gift shop s very small, so you may not be able to find something that fits your fancy. The Cider House was a great lil addition. The hot cider was delicious and the people were so knowledgeable about the castle grounds and things to do. I'd highly recommend you visit at any time of the year. But seeing it in the fall seems right as the ambiance and vibes match really well. I will definitely come back to visit the inside of the castle.Restrooms: Restrooms are inside the main visitor center.Dog-friendliness: Dogs are allowed but must be leashed at all times.Picnic area: Picnic area is near cider mill and bonfire area.
