Very interesting tutorial on the history and processing of maple syrup. They also have a store on the premises to buy all sorts of maple products. I would recommend this place to all my friends and family

Hands down the BEST maple syrup I’ve ever tasted and the nicest folks that work there. You can get samples of the syrup and taste the actual difference in flavor. I’m addicted!

Great for a half-day scenic excursion from Hartford. Homemade maple syrup made on premises along with a nice assortment of treats and gift shop delights. Friendly customer service that provides shipping for travelers. If you're lucky, they'll have maple syrup candy, bourbon maple syrup and rarest of all, grade B maple syrup.

(This review of mine was originally posted to Google, but it was inexplicably removed for likely arbitrary and/or petty reasons; this is why the two updates of this re-posted review may appear contrived/inorganic.) I have to say I'm pretty disappointed in this place, especially given that they're known to be the largest producer of maple syrup in CT and have been shown to run a competent, multifarious operation. I bought a gallon of their darkest syrup for cooking purposes (i.e., Grade A Very Dark/Strong Taste), and I must say that I'm unimpressed with the taste; the flavor in and of itself is just... not very maple-like, quite contrary to what you'd expect from a relatively habile and resilient business who's been sugaring for many years. It's basically a matter of the syrup being off-flavored (that should be lucidly obvious), i.e. in having a rather caramel-esque flavor profile with a surprising deficit of, as aforementioned, maple. Smelling it, I can clearly detect excessively strong caramelization notes... it's a borderline burnt smell, over-roasted coffee or cocoa, even; I wouldn't say it's outright burnt-smelling or burnt-tasting, though it's still (clearly) empyreumatic beyond expected norms. The overall taste is still decently complex with nuances of other dark sugars (e.g., dates) and other such flavors, and of course it still has some puny degree of baseline "maple" taste... but that's hardly a compliment, and compared to the same Grade A Very Dark/Strong Taste syrup I purchased from both Brookside Farm II and Crowhill Sugarhouse in Litchfield, the authentic/powerful maple flavor just isn't there (yes, this isn't my first rodeo with this grade: I do have a frame of reference, and I can say this maple syrup falls flat in flavor.) So, maybe a dud batch? Maybe their lighter syrups are more appropriately maple-flavored? Regardless, I feel rather beguiled, although it could be worse I suppose. Update: Yep, I guess this is what separates the good producers from the bad (or barely middling), i.e., whether or not they stop boiling in the very late part of the season (or at least keep this syrup for commerical purposes); Lamothe's Sugar House clearly wants to turn a profit and so will dupe customers with subpar syrup and sell it at retail. Honest producers will send their lousy syrup to mass food manufacturers who can nearly expunge off-flavors through further processing. Lamothe's? They'll sell you off-flavored junk under the guise of it being "Grade A," when that obviously couldn't be further from the truth IME (and it's an essentially non licet move to do so, might I add.) Second update: I'm lowering my rating to a single star for the sheer unabashed dishonesty, and, as already mentioned, the non licet practice of selling off-flavored maple syrup as Grade A. Really, even if it's just a one-off dud batch it doesn't change the fact that they sold/may still be selling it at retail, all after tasting it and egregiously lying about the "Grade A" designation... so it says a lot about the honesty of this place, pretty evidently. 1.0/5
