The Dr. and team are so good…. We live here part time and had a couple of visits with 2 of our dogs. One ended up having a heart crisis and they helped us understand where she was at and what would be best. They are very caring and knowledgeable.

This review is about the receptionist, I believe her name is Kathy. Here’s the story:
I am traveling through Pagosa Springs and unfortunately my 5 month old kitten possibly ate a rubber band (hair tie). I called to see if I could get a last minute appointment. I told her I’m 99% positive it was my black kitten but I also have a tabby kitten. She told me to bring them both in for an endoscopy. That seemed like a huge jump to me. I was a veterinary technician for 20+ years and I wasn’t understanding why they didn’t want to induce vomiting or do a barium series of X-rays before. I told her this and she said you should never induce vomiting for this because it can get tangled on the way up. I have witnessed hundreds of hair ties coming up with inducing vomiting and never seen an issue, AND if there happened to be an issue, helllooooo, it’s a veterinary hospital!! Isn’t that the best place to be in an emergency situation. So I made the appointment just to have a spot just in case and I started calling all of my veterinary friends. Talked to 3 very experienced emergency veterinarians and all 3 said you should absolutely induce vomiting and do a barium series rads. I called Kathy back and tried to explain that I really wanted to take steps before jumping into a procedure that could potentially cost thousands of dollars (She wanted to endoscopy BOTH kittens). When I asked about the barium she said a rubber band wouldn’t show up (which is correct). I told her the barium, however, would stick to the cloth from the hair tie and we could at least see where it was. She immediately huffs and puffs and rudely says “You never told me it was a hair tie”, then I heard a click. I thought she hung up on me but apparently she just put me on hold without saying anything. I waited maybe 3 minutes and she came back and said it’s all still the same thing, no inducing vomiting, no barium, straight to endoscopy on a 5 month old 7 lbs kitten (s). I told her I was just not comfortable with that plan of action and asked if I could sit on the thought until the next day. She said twice we HIGHLY don’t recommend that and they wouldn’t be able to do the endoscopy the next day. Honestly, this place just felt like they cared about the potential high paying procedures over the care of the patients. Not to mention the insanely rude attitude. The receptionist is the first point of contact and should be a people person. I don’t know how this vet is, she could be an outstanding vet, but she should consider having a chat with the rude lady up front. I ended up taking my kitten to Elk Park hospital and it was an outstanding experience!! The doctor immediately induced vomiting but nothing came up (it was too late by this point since I waisted my time talking to Kathy). He then did a barium series of rads and we determined that everything was passing through nicely. He even gave me a medication to lube the colon to help things along. Saved my kittens from an anesthesia procedure as well as me thousands of dollars. I highly recommend skipping this hospital and going to either of the 2 other vets in the town just to avoid a conversation with the angry front desk lady. I apologize to anyone that works there that isn’t rude. This is absolutely not on you, just Kathy. Good luck everyone!
UPDATE:
He passed the hair tie.

In a state where vet services can be hard to find…this practice make it easy every time. They understand Tanner is a part of our family and treat him with the care that demands every time. Love it there!

I've tried coming to this vet several times, I get over the bad experience over the phone and want to try again and I've never actually made an appointment because the receptionist that answers has for to be the most impatient person to run a front desk. San Juan veterinary clinic is definitely the better place! For you and your pet! I can't trust my pet to be safe with people who are rude.

On a Monday morning, the receptionist, Kathy, got me right in with my pet to see the doctor. Dr. Wagoner was a very caring veterinarian who answered all of my questions, and concerns and demonstrated the procedures needed for the care of my pet. The cost was reasonable. From the reviews of the other vets in the area, I am so glad I picked this clinic.
