I have shopped here and always loved the store. Yesterday I bought a green Christmas garland, amongst other things. It was wrapped in cellophane so I could see it, but I didn’t actually touch it until today. I took the cellophane off and noticed that it was broken in the middle- actually twisted so that it wouldn’t/couldn’t lay flat. Half of the decorations faced one way and the other half the other way. I took it back to the store this morning and was told that I should have noticed the sign that said seasonal items were not returnable. She then pointed to a sign (which I obviously didn’t notice) and said “sorry”. I mentioned again that it was non-functional and she once again said “sorry”. I said “so I’m just out my $38?” and she said “yes”. I asked if there was someone else I could talk to and she replied that there was nobody, but that anyone else would say the same thing! I am so very disappointed as it’s been my go-to store for gifts for several years as I live in Walnut Creek and it’s convenient. I will never again set foot in that store! Bye bye David!

Super cute store, but make sure not to touch anything when you go inside. I had a strange experience this week: my daughter took a book off the shelf and played with it for a few minutes while I took a phone call. I hung up, put the book back and started to walk out. A clerk grabbed the book and told me I needed to buy it, since she had played with it. There was absolutely no damage so I was very surprised and definitely annoyed. I told her that I would buy the book, but that I would never come back into the store. She just smiled and continued to ring me up. And she made sure to stamp "final sale" on my receipt. It was a very weird interaction and $30 I hadn't planned on spending!

Went to this store and an elderly lady followed me ( a Hispanic woman) and my boyfriends mom (white) and when we separated she continued to follow me and I had books in my hand she asked me if I was gonna buy them I said yes but she said she'd hold onto them at the front counter and when I noticed other people had items they were holding onto they weren't questioned definitely not returning here glad they've never gotten a cent from me. Also the stuff they have is definitely sold at Tj max/dollar tree, etc for cheaper price save your money don't give it to these racists

David M Brian is part of the McCaulou's Department Store Family. It is a wonderful gift store that has wide varieties and lots of fun stuff. The selection is not as broad as it used to be before the store moved into the smaller space. The staff can be a bit slow to help and respond, but good help is hard to find these days. Lots of fun gift ideas and even good stuff for your own home. Have fun shopping.

As soon I walked in an elderly woman started following me in store ... no welcome or didn't even offer assistance to help me find anything. She basically snatched the royal blue McKenzie napkin holder out of my hand like I was going to steal it . Thanks for reminding me how racist Walnut Creek is lady

Never shopping here again. Went here with my kids and bought a puzzle when the cashier asked if I've been to the downstairs area. We decided to go down and were browsing when my daughter and I were looking at their jams and giggling about their names. A worker (White, with short, gray hair) came by and then proceeded to follow us. At one point she stopped us and asked: "Were you planning on buying that item she (my daughter) has in her bag?" I told her we didn't take anything and asked the worker if she'd like to check my daughter's bag. She then says "No, no. If you say you didn't take anything that's fine." But my daughter had already opened her bag and showed her there was nothing inside. She claimed she saw us giggling and my daughter was putting something in her bag (it was a big brown shopping bag with a shirt we purchased from Zara) and figured we were stealing. There are just more polite ways of approaching someone - especially if you didn't even know for sure someone "stole" something - since she obviously was WRONG. I've never experienced something like this in all my life. It was a good life lesson for my kids to learn how to handle crotchety, old people like her.

I have been a loyal customer of David M Brain for a few years just buying small items once in a while. In January 2022 I moved to a new apartment and I bought a couple of expensive wall art with some rugs and a month or so later i went back to return the items and the manager Ann said that they don't credit the money back to my account and they can only give me a store credit. I received a store credit for $360 or something dollars and didn't it was sitting in my account. Today I attempted to return another wall art because I am again moving out of my apartment so I thought I can get store credit for something in their kitchen appliances instead Again Ann the manager said she can't return it because it's over a month. I walked downstairs to the kitchen department when an OLD WHITE MAN in his 90s Approached me. He stated that DAVID M BRAIN is NOT for me and I cannot enter his store in the future because reruns are NOT Allowed. I told him that if I want to shop from this store I can do that and he can't tell me what to do. He then told me that he will call the POLICE on me. I told him that I didn't commit any crime I just brought a wall art that I am not happy with and I can call the POLICE on him instead. I asked him if he was the owner of David M Brain and he walked away. I went back to the counter and bought a couple of kitchen appliances by force because the owner threaten to remove me from his store and I wanted to use my store credit of $360 because I wasn't allowed to come back to the old man's store. Finally Ann the manager apologized and stated that he is nice to his staff and since he is the owner she can't comment on him. While I was making the transaction Ann got another call and I over heard them asking Ann if I am nice to her because otherwise they were going to call the police on me. Ann told her coworker that yes she is nice. Ann told me to drive my car to the back of the store so she can drop it off my items to my car. I drove my Audi to the back of the car and entered the store, I saw a private security walked pass by me. I am sure they called the security also. This 90 year old racist owner of David M Brain is my big regret that I've spent at least over $1000 in his store and in return he told me not to come back and he will call the police on me. I feel sick in my stomach for his behavior. I have all of my proof of purchases in my bank that I purchased from this old man's shop. If I had known that the owner was a sick racist asking customers not to return to his store simply because the customer wanted to return a wall art, I would've never entered his shop. I don't know if I should let it go or take this matter more serious. I am a innocent loyal customer. Please advise ?

I didn't get her name. She is an older white woman 70s or 80s and I politely asked her if there was a bathroom for my toddler son who needed to use the restroom. I've shopped here before and had a couple items over $100 that I was going to purchase But after a rude reply to me I put them back and I left. When I asked her she wouldn't even look at me and she said no yeah we don't have one OK. It was her tone intonation and just flat out rudeness that was unnecessary. There are very few people here and It saddens me that small businesses are suffering this much but if this is how you show your appreciation and you can't even be a basic decent human being then maybe failure is something you should be accustomed to in life Also there is a bathroom. I've used it before.

This store has always been my absolute favorite in the Bay Area. It is my go-to store for gifts for birthdays, special occasions, friends, and the holidays. I always find some special gift and people that receive them, love them. I feel so fortunate to have such a great store in our community!

They need to reorganize their staff. I went in on a Sunday asking for artificial flowers and the old gentleman's response was quite interesting " I don't know where the display put the artificial flowers in the store!" As I walked away I overheard another older lady sales person ask her colleague ( the older gentleman ) "did she ask for artificial flowers doesn't she know that we sold them all on sale!" They need to bring in younger, more professional, and knowledgeable crew to their store. It's about time !
