This branch is usually excellent. I actually avoid the post office in Del Mar and travel farther to Solana Beach. But recently as the line grew, the only employee working the counter finally rang the bell for more help. A slovenly overweight man appeared to ask if anyone were just picking up mail. Hearing none, he departed. This is SOP for postmasters who NEVER roll up their sleeves to wait on customers. He had apparently directed the only other employee to empty trash and process packages instead of attending to customers. No one would ever run a business this way except the government, in particular, the U. S. Post Office.

Friendly and helpful in sending a book and a T shirt. They also offered me stamps, and I had been meaning to order some and they had all the new stamps that I wanted.

The staff is super nice and the garden path out front is great 5 stars for that but it's a USPS so as far as having to mail packages it's the most archaic location in town. You must get in a line for everything and there is always a line. No dropping off anything with a pre-printed label. No self service stamp/ postage machine. No pre-scanner. No outgoing boxes with an opening for anything larger than an envelope. Not even a scale drive elsewhere , also not part of my review but fyi for several months there has been a lot of construction in the area if you are heading south upon exiting this location.

How the post office keeps as organized as they do is beyond my understanding. So overall they do a pretty good job. But when you have to come to pick up a package and it's nowhere to be found, and the staff just don't care, it's frustrating.

THE FINAL UPDATE ! I dropped off a 12 oz bag of whole roasted coffee beans ( in a box ) here on Tuesday, Nov 30th for delivery to the Gold Coast, QLD, Australia. I was told by the male worker at the service counter that for $70 it would be delivered within 3 -5 days. He gave me the receipt with the circled tracking number and said I could track it. I tracked it to LAX where it stood still for 4 days. On Dec 4th it found it's way on a plane....end of tracking. After coming back here exactly a week later and complaining about the slack service to the same employee who took the package from me and then a supervisor named Joaquin...I was told that we ( USPS ) have no control if my bag of coffee beans is detained by customs for 4 days. He did not explain why for the $70 I paid there was no day to day tracking. The bag of coffee beans was FINALLY DELIVERED VIA JAPAN TO AUSTRALIA on Dec 10th....10 DAYS after I mailed it. The tracking update appeared on Dec 10th. I can't be bothered complaining in person again so READ THIS USPS in Solana Beach !

The most baffling customer service I've ever received at a post office. No one was at the desk when I came in and it took several minutes for a man to come out. He asked if I had QR codes for my envelopes that I wanted to ship and said he couldn't help me unless I had those. I asked if he could type the addresses in on his end (as I typically have done at the post office when I ship things) and he finally said OK. I asked if he had tape to seal my three small envelopes and he told me I would have to buy a roll of tape for $4. None of the other post offices I've been to have ever had a problem with me using small pieces of their tape to seal envelopes or small packages. Baffled at this treatment, I walked out without mailing my packages. That was a complete waste of my time and energy. Will be going to a different branch from now on.
