They often have a good variety whereas the big box's often give only one choice. So its a little like the old fashioned hardware stores. Also the odds of finding an employee willing to listen and help out is way way better than the bb's.

Best hardware store in town! Dog friendly and knowledgeable staff and a good selection of items.
My only quibble is that I would love more woodworking tools and gadgets ?
