Frustrating Paperwork Errors and Poor Accountability at CarMax Santa Rosa
I recently bought a car from CarMax in Santa Rosa. While the sales team was sufficient and capable, once they got the sale— didn’t invest in helping me learn about my new vehicle. The real issue, however, arose with their handling of the DMV paperwork.
CarMax filed my paperwork incorrectly, resulting in my title being sent to the wrong address. When I contacted them to correct the error, the manager acknowledged their mistake then told me it was my problem to fix. This left me spending several hours over multiple visits to the DMV to resolve an issue that was entirely CarMax's fault. The claim that CarMax will handle all the paperwork and make the sales process smooth and easy was false in my experience.
Only because I live in a small neighborhood and my postman recognized my name was the title not completely lost. This lack of accountability and refusal to correct their own mistake was incredibly frustrating.
On a positive note, the service department has been friendly, wonderful, and very helpful. I look forward to returning to them for any future service needs. However, due to the DMV paperwork debacle, I’m not sure I would buy a car from CarMax again.

This place is horrible got a car and I’ve been back to service 3 times for things they should of done before selling it and the the man that runs service is hyper sensitive so you can’t talk a certain way? I honestly think they don’t do anything for you to fix your car would never recommend this place like it was recommended to me

I got a fair price (the online estimate was accurate and fair), was able to leave the car, finish buying my new car down the street and complete the Carmax transaction later when it was less crowded. An overall wonderful experience. I would use them again to sell a car.

I've only sold cars to this particular dealer, so can't speak as to the buying side. But I've been quite impressed with the two transactions I've done here. Make an appointment, bring your car in and they'll quote you a price in short order. And then give you a week to decide. And don't bother you during that period. MUCH smoother and less stressful than transactions with the average car dealer.

Exchanged vehicles and that went well. However website lists specs about the vehicle that weren’t on it. Specially CD player and satellite radio. Neither one of these we’re available.

The finding of the vehicle I wanted and the general process went quite well, its where we get to the purchase process that gets a little sticky. There were a few issues that occurred that I felt if not occurred would have made it a full 5 star experience for I strongly believe if one says they are going to do something they should, and if they end up not being able to comply with their statement, explain why. First issue, after test driving the vehicle and deciding to move forward with the purchase, the sales associate said "Alright ill take it to the back and have my guys give it a wash and fuel it up for you and will be ready when we are done with paperwork". This did not happen for when they handed me the keys the car was bone dry with dirt and debris still on the vehicle, while on the test drive I had noted 3/4 tank of fuel, it was still at 3/4 when they gave me the keys. I was not going to make a scene about it as the cost would not be worth it, but it is the principle that counts. Would it have costed them that much to have done what he had said they were going to do and made me happy ? Second is I had asked for digital copy of the purchase agreement and all the documents provided which I had watched them scan in while we were doing the paperwork. The reason being that I needed to transmit the documents to my bank in a timely manner. I was assured by the initial sales associate I would get the email, I dealt with a second associate to finalize some of the paperwork. As I had not yet received the email containing the documents I asked that associate and he stated I should get it within the hour and if not (he handed me his business card) to email him and he will send it to me directly. I left with the vehicle and 2 hours later I had not yet received the email, I emailed the associate who gave me the business card. I never received a response and I have yet to receive a digital copy to this day. I am unsure if this was a stalling tactic to force me in to the horrible loan offered by Carmax or create a late penalty for me? Very disappointed! Lastly I had a friend come with me to inspect the vehicle he had noticed they had removed the bottom skid plate (for an inspection I assume), but when putting it back on they did not line everything up correctly and had one of the bolts cocked and not fully screwed in. This could have led to the bolt falling off the vehicle over time with vibrations and such. As the truck was a 2023 with just under 12k miles, things should not be about to fall off... I would be quite hesitant to purchase a vehicle again through car max and would give strong warning to those who would seek to purchase from them that some of them do not do what they say they are going to do, if they are willing to do that... What else ?

Easy process, friendly staff. No sales pressure. After I got the car I noticed a transmission issue. They fixed it under their warranty with no delay or hassles. I will definitely use them again!

My daughter had a great experience a month a half before I bought my car. Her experience was the reason I chose CarMax :)
