They always seem to have something going. They have a bunch of dance sessions going on. They have been closed for the holidays.

I am reporting here about a rather disturbing incident that took place a few years ago wherein Daniel Mollner who was the "facilitator" of the Monday night ecstatic dance jam was rather upset one night that only a handful of people remained for the closing circle after the dance. As a remedy he suggested that people should be barred from leaving the dance space until the closing circle had been completed. For a while I had been noticing his increasingly authoritarian vibe, and at this suggestion I felt extremely unsafe as I believed my civil liberties were being infringed. So I passionately objected to this suggestion and in response Daniel abrasively cut me off. An unsavory argument ensued wherein I caught glimpses of certain unhealthy aspects of Daniel's personality. Consequently, I decided to stop going to all events hosted by Daniel. This man is a talented DJ, but I believe he is totally unfit to be a conscious dance facilitator.

Wow! Attended the Tribute to Women’s Pop featuring Vivianne Castillo on Sat Aug 26 2023 and it was a fantastic show! The burlesque dancers were so entertaining and beautiful! And Vivianne was just stunning with her original songs and beautiful voice! I could listen to her all night. ? She’s also a natural comedian! Perfect package. ❤️ The seats were folding chairs instead of the usual theatre seats. The tickets cost $50/person and +18 years only. Concessions were available to purchase. All gender restrooms. That was a first for me! Overall, great venue and excellent performance by all the dancers and Vivianne!

This community Artspace is dedicated to supporting emerging artists and Diverse communities! The programming is forward thinking, inspiring, and includes all kinds of stuff--burlesque performances, black history month, Chinese New Year's, salsa dances--and is accessible--there is sliding scale or donation options for much of what goes on.I work here so I'm pretty stoked.

The 418 new lobby at the 155 River St South. I think that they have the lobby and two spaces (big and small halls), but I might be wrong

The floor is sprung, soft wood and well maintained! Really great dance floor! Thanks to Rita Rivera who chose it for the Dance Gallery (prior to the 418 Project rename). The 418 started with more emphasis on experimental performance and technical dance. International master teachers of Dance improvisation, Modern, Post Modern, West African and Brazilian dance taught there. Friday night dance jam and a contact improv jam were a thing as well. Some genres have held up or morphed. A contact improvisation jam, Brazilian dance class, Dance Improvisation Lab and Dance Church have all been going for more than a decade. New classes are popping up to seed the biggest current niche: free-form dance with predominantly male DJ/facilitators. (No alcohol, shoes or talking and some of these dance sessions offer a light structure.) Dance Church on Sunday mornings caters to old time Santa Cruz. It's the most affordable jam and is a fundraiser for the 418, the DJ of the day and the dance church collective. India Joze restaurant in the front has a highly creative chef who's culinary offerings have been a Santa Cruz treasure for many decades. A rare thing in Santa Cruz also occurs here. There's a weekend volunteer program in which people use the kitchen to make free food for public consumption, served Saturdays and Sundays downtown by Food Not Bombs. (Quite special in a town that's become so money oriented.) Which reminds me, you can rent the dance floor by the hour and hopefully create something. More performance art please! It seems there's always been something of value housed in this building and it may offer the best dance floor in the Bay Area.
