This was my first time shopping for a bike as an adult and for my 6 year old. Chris was incredibly helpful - he got my daughter set up with a bike and a proper fitting helmet. I also learned about the children's bike buy-back program which is absolutely wonderful! This not only helps with the pocketbook, but allows kids to develop a passion for cycling that is truly an investment in their health and sense of adventure.I was on the fence about an e-bike (have been for over a year). I explained to Chris my needs and what I was looking for in an e-bike. He not only listened to me, but was able to put me into the bike that was exactly what I was looking for. He also set me up with a secure lock, helmet, chain lube and a pump. The promotion with the maintenance plan is AMAZING and will ensure that my bike is in tip-top shape for a long time.I appreciate Chris and the entire staff at Epicenter Cycling Mission Street - they have made a life long customer of me!

I don't doubt that this shop can be a good choice for straightforward and simple fixes. But for anything more complex or nonstandard, I must provide thorough warning about their service department.
My bicycle is a DIY eBike conversion that I assembled myself, with some help from a now-closed bikeshop. I understand that this can be a bit off-putting to work with so I was very upfront about this when I brought my bike in to get some of the spokes replaced (as well as a drivetrain replacement, as I'd been long overdue to get the chain replaced). Epicenter cycling happily accepted the job, saying that the complicated rear tire mount wouldn't be an issue.
I should have realized that something was up when I first got my bike back. Not only had they missed one of the spokes in need of replacement, but the rear wheel was quite clearly mounted crooked. I took the bike back and they offered to complete the initial repairs at no additional charge-- but they also asked me if I remembered exactly how the rear wheel was mounted. (Red flag number two.) I did not remember, it had been years since I had done the assembly. If I had been taking it apart myself, I would have documented the order and position of the nuts and washers as I took them off. The shop didn't think to do that?
Eventually I get my bike back, and initially I am fairly happy with it. It takes me several weeks to notice that the rear wheel is STILL not mounted correctly, leading to a slight but noticeable wobble when travelling at >15mph. When my rear tire gets a flat, I take it back into the store to have them correct their prior repairs. They take the bike, citing that it'll take longer than usual, probably around four days. After ten days pass, I call the shop to inquire about the status of my bike and they tell me that two days earlier they decided that they can't work on it out of safety concerns.
EXCUSE ME?? Not only did they gladly take my money and MESS UP MY BIKE IN THE FIRST PLACE, they made no attempt to let me know that I would have to pick it up, still not fixed? Where were these safety concerns when I first took the bike in??? It would have been fine if they couldn't take the initial job, I would have just found a more qualified shop to take care of things.
I wasn't expecting this service department to be so unaware of their own incompetence.
Thankfully Pete at Bicycle Trip was able to fix the rear wheel mount and get my bike back to me in perfect running order in less than 24 hours-- although I had to pay extra for labor because he had to re-machine washers that this bike shop had carelessly lost.

The sales and service team are remarkable. They show an attention to details when I describe my needs and preferences and are thorough in conducting maintenance. When suggesting accessories, the sales team is fully transparent on the products pros and cons and they are respectful to whatever pruchasing decision is made. I only shop here because I trust these folks and they know their stuff!

Great bike shop in Santa Cruz.
I had a few different questions, and I got quick help from a friendly employee, who got me the info I needed. In the case of a new tire, I originally thought about ordering online, but the employee gave me some good feedback based on where I'm riding locally, so I wound up buying it in store instead. Feeling much more confident with the choice after getting to check it out in person and talk to someone who knows the trails it'll be on. Looking forward to getting it out on some dirt!
It's a nice setup, lots of inventory, and I had a friend rent a bike there a few years back with no issues. Great shop!
