Great museum. Will be back. While en route to the parking garage, did I miss something? He appears to be the only kid in a spider man outfit....(bizzare.) Third person in less that 9 days (Spiderman outfits)

This is a small, yet very unique museum. It shows a limited, but very precise collection of specific art. The overall atmosphere of the space is open and airy. Admission is free. So, it is a nice place to go into a view whatever art they are exhibiting whenever you are in the area and they are open. This museum is located on the second floor of the shopping plaza. A good business to look for is CPK, as the museum is upstairs above that. Overall, any art space is a space well-used. This is the case with this art museum.

I gave four starts because art is literally my favorite thing in this world. So as far as my scale for museum star ratings, this is not as great as I would have liked. We bought tickets to a special exhibit which implied the crowds would be somewhat monitored. They weren't. It felt like going to The Louvre in mis August. There were so many people. No audio tour options. I felt too uncomfortable to get close enough to other people to read the descriptions next the works of art and settled for the larger print summary on the walls of each room. Van Gough is one of my biggest inspirations for my own art and I was really looking forward to spending the two allotted hours leisurely exploring the exhibit, but it was just too crowded. I felt uncomfortable and rushed. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I didn't enjoy the experience as much as I would have liked. The quality and thought behind the exhibit was amazing.... I wish I could have gotten close enough to read the descriptions to take in all the hard work that went into putting this on.

Heads up: this is tiny and about the size of one large warehouse with one or two exhibits. However, it's free and tucked in paso nuevo if you're strolling around. You can easily just poke your head in for five minutes, check out the art, and go. While small, it's clear the artists and curators put in thought into the exhibit and presentation. You go up the stairs (which were beautiful/instagrammable by themselves), and the museum is right next to the public restrooms. Especially if you're already headed to the bathrooms, definitely worth just quickly popping your head in.

Free things to do in Santa Barbara Located on the second floor of the Paseo Nuevo mall near the intersection of Chapala and De La Guerra, MOCA Santa Barbara is much smaller than expected. I like museum browsing and I especially like it more when it is free. Stop by if you are in the area and check out what they are showcasing. You might find something interesting.

Contemporary art is always intriguing. Some very interesting pieces in a small area. Nice short departure from all of the shopping on State Street.

Contemporary art may not be for everyone but if it's yours, this is a lovely venue.

We really love catching an exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santa Barbara when we can. They don't always have exhibits going, so it pays to check their website first to make sure they're open. It's not a huge museum, but it's free to the public so who can complain? They've been around for over 50 years, the exhibits are always very interesting, as are the events they occasionally offer. Did I mention free? Here's hoping the temporary closure is safely lifted soon.HoursSunday:Noon - 5 pmMonday: ClosedTuesday:ClosedWednesday:11 - 5 pmThursday:11 - 8 pmFriday:11 - 5 pmSaturday:11 - 5 pm

Wonderful shows and events here, and lectures and presentations of all kinds. I went to a free lecture about natural pigments used in Native American rock art, very interesting.
