Leo's family response to Feb 9th veterinarian comments re: his death It is beyond disappointing that failing to properly train a staff member re: post-surgical care and failing to supervise an under-trained staff member is not considered a violation of the Veterinary Medicine Practice Act. This was an entirely avoidable tragedy brought about by a system breakdown within your practice. We wish you had informed us that you were on the ground looking for Leo. Our family and dozens of volunteers spread out across Terra Linda, Santa Venetia, and San Rafael in our quest to bring Leo home. If we had known you had any role in actively searching or if we had witnessed any willingness to help, you could have contributed to our coordinated efforts. The payment for "property damage" we received from you and your insurance company will cover the cost of a new dog, but this isn't about money. You're right, we continue to grieve Leo, and it's a heartbreak that's more acute since we know he died alone, scared, and in pain. We sincerely hope that you did, indeed, review protocols with your staff. And we hope that you will learn from the part you played in this, as the owner and leader of Terra Linda Veterinary Hospital. People should be able to trust their veterinarian to care for their pet and ensure their safety; our wish is that no other family or animal goes through this senseless, preventable experience.

Our appointment with you was punctual, pleasant, and reassuring. It is hard to deal with the public and personalities. It is my guess that it is people, not animals, who make the veterinary profession so hard. Thank you for creating an atmosphere of peacefulness in your clinic.

Catastrophe and sorrow. I failed my dog by entrusting him to this practice to be safe. On 9/21/23, our beloved Maltese, Leo had teeth cleaning and 4 teeth extracted. He was "lost" by a vet assistant when she took him for a walk, still with an IV catheter/bandage on his leg, as he was recovering from anesthesia. The leash was not attached to his harness and he slipped out of his collar. Leo searched for home, running throughout east TL and Santa Venetia. We found his dead body on the 6th day (death likely due to dehydration and exhaustion) in a dry creek bed on San Pablo ridge. A healthy dog/family member had a premature death related to what would normally be a non eventful teeth cleaning, dental extraction.Choose your place of animal healthcare business wisely.
