I legitimately considered not leaving a review, because once more people learn about this shop and its owner (Tony), things are going to be too busy to get my vehicle in for work haha. I had been hearing a screeching from what I believed to be the front right of my vehicle (metal on metal) and knew it wasn’t a pad or rotor and had decided it was a wheel bearing that needed to be replaced. I called Northern Stars Auto at my father’s recommendation and described my issue. Tony ordered my right wheel bearing (warned me that I might need to do both left and right, but didn’t push my decision at all) and told me to be there as early as I could, so he could get everything done in one day. He was concerned that I was driving from Healdsburg and didn’t want me to have to make multiple trips and waste my time. Not only was I wrong about my diagnosis, but Tony very quickly found that it was my drive shaft assembly that had failed. I figured I was out of luck and would have to wait days for the part and for Tony to have time to do the work; nope. In 15 minutes, tony had found an aftermarket option, placed an order that would arrive in a few hours and assured me that he’d have it done by the late afternoon. I was ecstatic, but he wasn’t done there. He was concerned that it was hot, gave me two bottles of water if I was planning to walk around town to kill time, offered for me to stay on his lobby couch and use the free wifi, for as long as I wanted. AND recommended things to go do and places to eat in San Rafael. Tony not only got all the work done, in the time that he had quoted, but also gave me a completely reasonable price for everything. (Oh and he fixed my air conditioner, my radiator and refilled all of my fluids, just because. I can’t say enough good things and I am incredibly grateful. THANK YOU TONY!

this is THE PLACE if you have a Japanese car. Tony and Tom are fantastic, go the extra mile, and are fair fair fair! Been going here - wow! - for like 30 years (from when it was in the previous location behind the oil change) :-)

Tony at Northern Star was informative and quick to diagnose what was going on with our car. He was efficient in getting the work done within our time constraints and I felt it was very fair pricing since unfortunately we've had to have this same work done years ago by a lesser quality mechanic. We've been driving around our car for about a week after taking it in to Northern Star and it feels so much safer and smoother. Thanks Tony!

My car ended up at Northern Star after experiencing a mechanical issue on the road. Tony was able to complete a quick diagnosis and gave me great advice on how to proceed. I don't normally expect such honest service from auto repair shops, so I was extremely impressed and grateful for his help. I really believe he had my best interest in mind. Even though I live far away from his shop, I wouldn't hesitate to take my car back to him. Recommended!

Called Northern Star at 9:30am after getting ridiculous quotes all day (up to $370) for a transmission fuel drain and fill up. He answered the phone quickly. Gave me the cheapest price by far, had my car in and out in 45 minutes. Extremely friendly, wonderful pricing and quick to get things done right. Will be using him from now on!

Tony did a used car inspection for me today and was very thorough! He took it for a drive and it over heated, so he did extra work to get the car back to the shop. He even called later to make so that I made back to the car lot. Very respectful and professional service!

I had an emergency repair and they were kind enough to let me swing by for an on-the-spot fix, which they did without charging me. During the holiday season it is impossible to find anyone to fix a car so I am extremely grateful for their kindness and will be back in the new year!
