Not worried about the prices. This is a local gem. Where else are you going to get bait north of the Golden Gate

Yuppies go elsewhere. If you like good bait and real fisherman- this is your spot. Old school and funky and everything you need.

The absolute best place in Marin County to get fresh top quality in-the-water local dungeness crabs. You can also see Emma the egret in action. Now is the season.

I'd heard this was a good place to get live bait so I made my first visit this past Saturday on the way to McNear's Pier with my 5 and 7 yr old boys. Upon arriving, I felt good about this place. Long-time locally owned shop with live bait, some tackle, and a wealth of local fishing knowledge, and Keith seemed like a kind old grandpa fisherman. I had only intended to get bait, but when I mentioned to Keith that my boys only had light weight spincast reels (we are only familiar with freshwater fishing) , he suggested I buy two Daiwa open face rod/reel combos he had on display. They were marked down from $109 to $59, and he said "you'd pay twice that if you bought these at Big5". Now, normally I research any purchase decision over $10, but I felt like I could trust Keith and it felt like the perfect Hallmark moment, so I pulled the trigger and bought both combos as well as the hooks, leaders and sinkers needed for saltwater fishing. How cool to get your rod and reel from a local bait shop on the Bay? Fast forward 2 hours. I'm sitting on Mcnears Pier with my boys and I figured I should learn something about the tackle we just bought, so I searched online and discovered that the rods and reels (Daiwa DSK40-B/F702H). I just paid $120 for at Loch Lomond Bait Shop are available at Big5 for $50! ($24.99ea). And they were on sale at Academy.com for $9.99ea!!!!! Now, either Keith straight up lied to me, or he is very confused about the market value of the equipment he sells. Considering he's been doing this for 48 years, my guess is it's the former. Additionally, these are described online as lightweight fresh water fishing combos, not recommended for salt water. Again, Keith knew we already had light weight rod and reel set ups that they could use. I thought I was buying a more hearty salt water rig my boys could grow with. Keith assured me that was the case. So needless to say, I feel completely bamboozled. I plan to visit the shop tomorrow to test Keith's customer service skills. I'll be asking for a refund and return. The gear still has the plastic and tags on it, so hopefully not a problem. Additionally, my oldest son has long hair and Keith kept referring to him as "the daughter" and "Petunia". We didn't correct him, but my son was a little bummed about it after we left. . Oh, also, the dead shiners he gave us as bait yielded not a single strike during our 2 hours at McNears pier. :-(. UPDATE: SO, I am updating this review with the status of my return. Long story short, Keith refunded my money, but only after calling me names ("crazy", "nuts") and yelling at me to "get out of my shop". I greeted Keith with a cheery "good morning Keith", explained diplomatically that the market rate for this combo is $24.95 and he went ballistic. I offered him screenshots of the Daiwa, Big5 and Academy websites to prove the fact of the matter and he replied "I don't care what that crap says online. That doesn't mean anything." We went back-and-forth for about 30 seconds and then, to his credit, he said "OK what do I owe you? I'm gonna give you a refund and then get out of my shop and don't come back." That worked for me. So, although Keith's manners aren't great and his business ethics are questionable, I have revised my rating from a 1-star to 2-star because he did the right thing in the end of granting my refund.

This is one of those, "Thank god these people are here" reviews. My kids and I were planning an 11 day sailing excursion up the delta, leaving from San Mateo. For months I planned this trip for the 4th of July. The day we left port (June 30th 2021) seas and wind were calm, kids were enjoying themselves. Then the wind started blowing around 12pm, and 24 hours later is still blowing. It's going to blow for the next few days.My daughter got sick around Alcatraz, the boy when we were around Angel Island. I could have pressed on another 4 hours or go left to this marina I could see in the distance. With 2 battered kids I surrendered and turned west to Loch Lomand. We were met with a great staff and a high end grocery store.Christine was super understanding and awesome about letting us keep our boat there for a few days. Kids and I spent one night there and the next morning turned our vacation around by taking an uber to the best western corte madera.A few days later when the wind calmed down my son and I returned to take the boat back home to San Mateo.Just wanted to say thanks for giving us safe harbor. You guys are great.

The man that runs the place is knowledgeable and a fun character to talk to. His buddy helping him out. Is also a great guy to talk with. This is a old school bait shop. A dying breed of shops. Hope it carries on to a next generation
