Both of my children have been doing the LAMI Tall Ship sleep away camps for years. They love their time on the ship. It has taught them so much in terms of responsibility and taking care of themselves. They become immersed in the sea and the natural world. I 100% recommend sending your kids to Sea Camp. Wish I could go too!

What a fun experience! I’ve seen this before but this was the first time ever that I’ve gone sailing. Though it’s more of a cruise as you leave the harbor and go north a short way, it was still very enjoyable. You can bring snacks and beverages (just no glass please) and enjoy the sail. The crew was wonderful about answering questions and letting you help with the rigging. It’s a great way to celebrate a birthday with a few friends!

LAMI is Los Angeles' connection to a world of on-the-water programs for youth from diverse backgrounds. It is open to all students and adult volunteers. No prior experience is necessary to come aboard and learn how the ocean, the wind, wooden ships and helpful crew will change your life. To say this is a fantasy short circuits the profound reality. I'm grateful to

Excellent program teaching our youth how to learn to love learning, breakdown social and ethic barriers and have fun doing it. Can't say enough good things about how effective this program is. 5 Stars all the way!

It was hard to enjoy the cruise with those kids working so hard. One said she was only 12 another said they were so short staffed they didn't get water or food breaks. And none of them get paid.

This is a great place to volunteer, I've met such amazing and kind people and they all love what they're doing. The environment is very ambitious which makes me feel like doing more for them.

The Los Angeles Maritime Institute runs an amazing youth program for middle school students. The full program has the students go on day sails during the school year. And during the summer, the students go on a several day voyage around Catalina Island. I've volunteered with this organization for several years. And now that I'm on the other coast, I'm still able to help out by helping with online projects. Anyone who knows how to sail or would like to learn how and wants to work with kids should consider volunteering at LAMI.
