“I like Trader Joe's for some basics, including frozen penne arrabbiata, hash browns, and maple flavored poffertjes. I also like the fresh micro greens. Easy breakfast, lunch and dinners at a reasonable price.”

“Fabulous produce. Much better than what you can get at the farmers market at CSM. They have the midnight watermelons right now...OMG SOOOOOOO GOOD! They are incredibly sweet and juicy, and it's difficult to get a bad one. I'm not sure I ever have before. My folks live them, too. I've seen them at other produce stores and they have been more expensive. I usually buy 2 at a time because I'm afraid they're going to sell out for the season. I also buy yellow nectarine when they are in season. The ones I bought a couple days ago were so favorable and juicy, I almost couldn't handle it. I mean, just feel rich flavor, juicy, not pithy at all. Just superior quality. I don't mind spending more $ for good fruit because a lot of times what you get at the supermarket is crap. They've been picked too early and shipped in trucks that are too cold, and what you end up with is tasteless, poor textured fruit that refuse to fully ripen before it expires. I find that's even the case at the farmers market. Not here though. And even though I don't mind spending more $ for higher quality fruit, here, I don't really have to. The owner is also fun to chat with and is incredibly generous with sample requests. I've never heard him refuse a sample to a customer before. And I take advantage of it because it's reassuring to know what you're getting before you might get all the way home and are disappointed. That kind of customer service is severely lacking at grocery store produce departments.

One last thing... if you are lucky enough to find yourself here during Muskat Grape season...holy sh*t balls...BUY THEM. At least get a sample. They will change your life. Not too many places have them - Piazza's does, but not too many other places - but they are simply incredible. I'm really not a grape person. I never buy any of the regular types, but these are on a while different level than those. They are seriously addictive. I would probably allow myself to get sick eating too many at a time, so I strictly manage the amount I let myself consume in a sitting. Oh they're so good. It's not their season right now but I'm just imagining them and I can almost taste them. Soooo Good!”

“Small middle eastern grocery store specializing in a few items you wouldn't find at the other halal middle eastern markets in the area. No meat here just drinks and groceries.”

“The picked foods in the jars and the produce is fantastic and reasonably priced. The dried fruits and nuts section is fantastic and very competitively priced. Pretty much everything else is overpriced in my opinion. If you go in and shop smart, this place is fantastic.”

“Favorite store. Really good selection and superb quality. They even carry Hungarian vines, too. (Tokaji included.) Just to mention a few random things: amazing braided cheese, all sorts of salamis and cold cuts, extreme variety of delicious berry jams (red current is my favorite), wonderful tea selection, cookies, desserts - from so many countries...! And the prices are good, too. Thank you for making all these super yummy things available for us. ?”

“This seems like the best grocery store in San Mateo. There's a nice deli, and lots of fresh produce. It's mostly on the expensive side so I don't buy very much.”

“I love to venture out to new places, and being that I needed one specific item and didn't want to drive to SF where parking sucks, I found this little market that had what I needed and more. Reasonable prices than these other Hispanic markets and even offer homemade food that looked pretty good, cash only for the fresh food. Ill definitely make that small drive out there again.”

“I much rather support a local business rather than a corporate chain. So I have started coming regularly making my purchases of vegetables. The prices are on par to the Safeway on El Camino and they are never busy when I drop by. I've bought my cheeses, 2 types, and beef liver and also chorizo from the meat section and was very pleased with the quality. The taqueria has pleased me three times now. The quesabirrias were very AFFORDABLE and the cook was very generous with both the amount of cheese and meat served; the quesadilla was extremely cheesy; the pupusas queso con frijol were extremely yummy with the sauce and pickled cabbage.”

“Pupusas! Cheese, cheese and pork, cheese/pork/beans, chicken and cheese! Choose them all! So delicious! Casual, cafe-style location. Many tables or take to go! Fast service but we ordered online and picked up. Ample parking but don't forget to pay the meter!”

“Clean, employees are reasonably polite and helpful but not necessarily friendly. Relatively small store physically but they seem to have everything a larger store would usually have. I didn't see alcohol but I wasn't looking for it.”

“The supermarket is clean and well organized. The coffee station is located in the front of the store. It is so convenient to grab, pay, and go. The pastries are also located near the front registers. Coffee and the walnut pound cake was perfect. Very fresh produces and meats. Friendly and helpful staff. They have a private parking lot and street parking.”

“Growing up in the PHX, it takes a special kind of mexican food to catch my attention. It's either "really good"...or just "meh". Can't say I've ever had Mexican food that blows my socks off, or disgusted me. Anyways, I'm all about tagging along with my coworkers to try a new place, and we ponied up to Chavez Market. I had the Carne Asada California Burrito. That means it has french fries in the burrito. From there, you build your own with your choice of 8 or 9 different meats and all the standard accouterments. In one word - SOLID! Everyone in my party really liked what they ordered. They have an extensive menu that includes plates that come with rice and beans, and various other traditional meals. My opinion, if you like authentic Mexican fare, you will most likely agree that it's at minimum, really good" food. For me, I'll definitely be back. Go here.”

“I would like the manager of the San Mateo store to know of the gem he/she has working them! Khalida in the produce department is to be commended for her hard work and kindness! She makes sure her department is clean and well-stocked with "fresh" produce! She never hesitates to go that extra mile to assist the customer and is always cheerlful and friendly. Her smile can brighten anyone's day!”

“This place is a nice little shop on the street corner and it has a lot of nice imports from Hispanic countries. It's right next to San Mateo High School so it's good as an after school spot to pick up a snack or a place to get an energy drink or snack before school.”

“I wanted a custom piñata for my son's Two Fast theme bday. My coworker recommended La Piñata to me.I went in person about two weeks before I needed the piñata. I showed my inspiration photo (blue race car) and Beverly took a picture of my photo, sent a text to someone, and then told me that it would be ready by the day I needed it. Keep in mind that this transaction was done using hand signals, broken English (Bev), and broken Spanish (Me!). I used Google Translate on my phone and my husband put his Spanish to good use.The price was $65, and I was told to come after 3 on May 31. I didn't get a receipt or confirmation. I just had to trust the process! My son's nanny called for me the day of and initially there was a bit of confusion about what needed to be picked up. I had already made plans to leave work and get there by 3:30, but when she called, they told her to tell me to come after 5:30. That meant I had to drive back home, pick up my son, and then go back to San Mateo. That was a bit of a hassle. When I got there, the gentleman was nice but he wanted me to show a receipt. He finally believed that I paid and just told me to go.My advice:1. Know Spanish2. Get a receipt3. Give yourself a two to three day buffer in case the piñata isn't ready.Overall, I was pleased with the results! The store has plenty of Mexican candies and various piñatas to choose from, too, if you don't want to go the custom route.”
