First time shopping for a project at a proper lumber shop. Found two 12' pieces of Oak for an edge-glued desk/console in my flat. Used two Ikea stands that I squared together and reinforced for the top. At this pricing, I'm comfortable moving forward practicing some proper joinery with hardwood. I dont have a planer, so their lumber being planed at the same thickness with a single straight edge made this project easy to slap together.

Been going to San Marcos Hardwood since I was a kid working in my dad's cabinet shop. Don and Ronda are always kind and professional with everyone who comes in. I won't buy my cabinet material from anywhere else.

Good local supplier. Worked for me because they have a panel saw and for a couple bucks they cut my plywood sheet so the pieces fit in my vehicle.

I've used this place many times over the years and have been pleased with their prices and service. But my last visit left a bitter taste. I needed some 1/2 cherry for a small project. One of the desk/cashier guys told me the boards I was looking at were $ 5.90 / board foot. When I went back to buy some; he again said it was $ 5.90 / board foot. In the wood working world a "board foot" has a very specific definition. it is 144 cubic inches or 1 foot by 1 foot by 1 inch. The board I purchased was a bit over 8 ft. long by 6 inches wide by 1/2 inch thick. So it would take four feet to make up one board foot. They charged me as if the board was a full inch thick or $ 5.90 / square foot. BIG Difference. Like double the price at $ 11.80 if it was a "board foot". I went back and asked why and was told they have the wood milled from 1 inch wood to get 1/2 inch so they charge for all the waste. Had I known that I would have bought 1 inch wood and milled it myself at my shop. I'm sure the folks at Palomar College and the hundreds of their students will appreciate knowing this.
