Last year I was looking for a skilled furniture restoration business in our community. With the Grain has a few really great reviews written by satisfied customers, so I made contact with Chip in June 2022 to see if he would refinish a dining room table and buffet for me. After almost 9 months and over 40 emails, he always says he wants to do the work for me but all he offers are excuses and delays. His last email says that I am not helping him by pressuring him to get the project started. I wasted too much time waiting for him to follow through.

I inherited my grandparents' 1928 dining room table with 8 chairs and a matching Buffet. They were in desperate need of bringing back to life. Chip did just that, he works miracles with wood. I also brought four kitchen table chairs and a kitchen table to be refinished. They were in pretty bad shape, when you sat in any one of the chairs, it wobbled so badly you thought you were going to fall off. Chip worked miracles again with the chairs and kitchen table. The refinished kitchen furniture will be sitting in my kitchen very soon. Chip is the only one I trust to do any refinishing/restoration work for me.

We had some delicate Kachinas carved by Hopi craftsmen which were damaged by movers. Chip did a fantastic job of repairing the Kachinas, which now look as good as before the damage! We would definitely use him again for any delicate wood repair.

Chip has done several projects for us - each has been perfect. He is a genius because to our amazement, he was able to perfectly duplicate a missing carved top of the back of one of our 4 antique dining room chairs. I cannot tell which chair is the one he repaired. Plus, he's a great guy to work with. I highly confidently recommend his service.

I have a very special antique carved wood vanity that was recently broken in a move. I was not sure if it could be fixed but Chip did a beautiful job repairing it. If you are looking for a true woodwork specialist who knows how to handle delicate antiques, I highly recommend Chip and With the Grain Woodcraft. Not only is he skilled but he is also a pleasure to work with. Chip is now at the top of my list of craftsmen should I ever need any woodwork or antique repair done again. I've attached photos so that you can see the broken vanity parts vs what it looks like now.

Chip Geraghty did a fabulous job refinishing my two cedar chests. Both were from the 1940s. The first one had been painted by my aunt an ugly red and the feet had suffered water damage. Chip spent hours and multiple sanding disks sanding off the paint. He repaired the water damage and delivered a beautifully finished chest. The second chest had water damage and separation on the lid from an aquarium that leaked, as well as the lacquer finish was cracked and crazed. He repaired the separation so I can't tell where it was, and gave the chest a beautiful, hand-rubbed finish. Because Chip is conscientious and does such a good job, his services are in high demand. He never rushes a job so you may have a bit of a wait, but he is worth it. He is in business for himself and as a result he can only take cash or checks.

I had a repair that needed to be quoted quickly (72 hours) per insurance policy. I called With the Grain and spoke with Chip (great name for wood repair business). Initially, he was helpful and after a brief discussion and viewing of photos, he said he'd email me a quote. Great! Problem solved. Later, he texted and said he won't quote without seeing the damage (it is a deep scrape into custom cabinetry). I tell him fine, I'm out of town but I'll have my mother go over and let him into the house. I call my mother and make arrangements. I text him back and say my mother will let him in. He then says he wants $100 just to look at the damage. He says it will take him an hour to look at the scratch for the quote. Ok...his shop is in SLO, my house is SLO, that's a little steep to look at a scratch but I need it done quickly so I agree to pay. I ask how he takes payment and offer my credit card. He says he doesn't take credit cards. I ask him to invoice me because I'm out of town. He says "Well, I don't know you..." and says he can't trust me to pay him for his time. (!!! what???) I tell him, "Well, I don't know you and I'm trusting you'll do good work." He says he's been burned by these "insurance deals" before. (?) He then says he wants my mother to go get him $100 cash. I tell him I'm not sending my 79-year old mother, who has a fractured arm, to an ATM to get him cash. At this point, I'm creeped out and thank him for his time but we should not work together. I was sorry I already gave him the property address. The personal insult I felt being treated as if I'm some scheming, dishonest scofflaw aside, he was about to make the easiest money because I just needed the repair done and insurance was paying it. Whatever he was going to quote, he was going to get because I just needed it done. I understand that being burned really stinks. But punishing other honest, respectable and hard-working people who are just trying to give you business and treating me like a scumbag because of some other person's misdeeds is bad for business, bad for our community and just plain wrong. I wish you the best but hope you improve.
