Sent my father in law to pick up a few bags of jerky this past Saturday. Online price $33. He was charged $40 because Ray claims the price of meat went up. I agree the price of everything is going up but this makes them guilty of False Advertisement. Guess I'll go back to Cattaneo Bros. Really upsetting when you try and support local companies and they did not put any effort into customer service.

Ray's Swiss Sausage is as good as it gets! Every bit as good as the Swiss made by Ray's Dad and Uncle in the basement of Berkemeyer's Butcher Shop, which was once located on Chorro St., where "Luna Red" is located today.

9/13/2020My husband actually *worked* at Cattaneo's for awhile, and after hearing about Ray's, wanted to check them out! It didn't turn out very well at all. We live close to Hwy 227/Broad St., so just drove out to where we had seen Ray's. We called during business hours and a recording stated they were open until 5pm (it was only a little after 4pm when we called). When we got there, we pulled in at the sign and there was a gate closed to block cars driving through. I parked and he walked in at the side, but couldn't see where the store was located. There was a Ray's van parked there, so we knew it was the correct location. He walked toward the back, and then was walking back up to the car when some woman yelled at him from a building that looked like a house, "What are you doing here? What are you doing here?" - very rude and cranky. He said he was looking for Ray's and she just shouted back rudely, "We're CLOSED!" and slammed the door.Wow! Way to have a business - first you LOOK unavailable, then you confirm it! Guess you just don't need any customers? Have you ever considered putting up actual signage, and keeping actual business hours? We absolutely will never purchase any Ray's product anywhere, after that very rude "welcome".

Jerky experience! Local Eval: After a doctors visit near the airport, we were in no rush, so we decided to go the scenic route to AG/James Way/Oak Park Blvd to see our dentist, via Edna valley. At the beginning of the Valley, my wife notice their roadside sign, so I turned in at the last minute. It is a countryside place complete with the neighbor's chickens roaming about. It was around midday on a quiet weekday, and we were alone visiting there. I went in while my wife took in the view. A fairly nice lady, who apparently was new, and admitted to not knowing the details about the products was trying to help. I was asking basic questions, like which sausages were not frozen, which were spicey, which were smoked, & how long you needed to cook the smoked ones. Since she knew little, she spoke to someone hidden by a wall, and received the answers. That voice sounded irritated, which was not polite at all. You either need to train your representative, or come out to greet the guest. I did remember that at least one review commented on the rudeness displayed here, and still was taken aback by this. Regardless, I decided to buy a pound of Bratwurst, which consisted of two long links pre-packed...which seemed to identical to what one can find in some of our local supermarkets. It was $8. I did not even dare to ask if it was freshly made, since apparently, questions are not welcomed here. As I concluded, the transaction with the lady, apparently the owner, Ray, came out, walked around me, apparently annoyed, and did not even acknowledge my existence...let alone even talk to me. Apparently, Ray could not care less about either customer service, nor how to be civil toward his customers, which is uncommon around here. He was totally inappropriate and should not have a roadside stand open if you do not care about customer service and are flagrantly RUDE! I could not care less about the sausage at this point and it seemed just the same as what one would buy in a supermarket without the attitude. You can have far better local service, and fresher sausages or salami, at Allepia in Atascadero, Arroyo Grande Meat Company in Arroyo Grande, or even housemade sausages made in Sprouts [which is quite lean as well]. I even like Trader Joe's pre-cooked Bratwurst. Since I grew up in both NYC and PA, and had tons of Slovak relatives who owned farms, who made and smoked their own old school triple smoked Kelbasa, I surely knew that and other smoked fine meats. In NYC, we had the East Village [with Ukrainian or Polish eats/butcher shops], the upper east side Hungarian or German Butcher shops, or Greenpoint Brooklyn which had Polish-town [still in existence]. Even SF had a decent Russian hill area with a few East European places that had zillions of cured meats. Over the many decades, I also came to know & enjoy the fine Jamons from Spain, the savory Prosciuttos from Italy, and more. It is really shocking in our usually friendly area, that you can have vendors that even have a worse attitude than that of many New Yorkers. I also doubt that this has anything to do with the last 3 years of general public rudeness & hostility that we have become all too familiar with. Don't normalize JERKS nor JERKY behavior! In short, this was likely among the most horrid customer service experiences that I have had in this area. If someone does not care about how they treat people, it undermines any confidence in the quality or freshness of their product. I am not going to take a chance and will now promptly trash this sausage. I am no longer curious nor interested in their products, and will boycott them.

I never thought any store-bought jerky could be better than Cattaneo Bros, which I ate growing up between times I couldn't get homemade jerky from my dad or friends' dads. By that I mean SUGAR FREE and authentic; all other store-bought "jerky" (ha ha) is loaded with sugar sugar sugar sugar sugar -- Ray's Own and Cattaneo's are about the ONLY brands you can buy with zero sugar (except the teriyaki). That alone makes both companies' jerky worth five stars. No cowboy or rancher I ever heard of put sugar in jerky .... sugar is for CANDY. Only a city cowboy would put sugar in jerky! For store-bought, if you love thick cut, Ray's Own is EASILY the best, by a landslide. Hands down. I always have a bag or two in my vehicle, its shelf life is forever and it's a godsend when you're in a rush on the road but need to eat smart. Best of all, this ZERO SUGAR jerky is made pretty close to the way the real old cowboys and ranchers made it and still do. Ray's Own is SUPER YUM. As for all the SAUSAGES ... like the jerky, Cattaneo Bros brand is pretty good, a smart choice yes, but RAY'S OWN ARE THE BEST if you really want to impress somebody who knows authentic old time stuff. You'll only get better if you befriend an old ranch family that's been making sausage for seven generations and Ray might be using the same recipe anyway because he probably wheedled it out of one of those ol' timer cowboys!!! Ray's Own is REALLY really good food across the whole brand's spectrum, I've tried pretty much all of it. Special mention of the Bratwurst ... man is it GOOD!!!!

GREAT JERKY! After years of driving by, WANTING to stop in, but didn't...I finally did! And ate some yummy jerky for lunch. I love jerky, and am picky about it, and Ray's Own has the consistency and quality that I can appreciate. Stop by, and don't wait a few years!

So dry and acidic that it was far too difficult to eat. We decided to give it to our dog instead. Spend your $19 elsewhere. Plenty of good jerky around....don't waste your money on the Peppered Beef Jerky from Ray's. Just terrible.
