What a magical Time Machine! We stayed in room 136: Swiss Rock. Our toddler loved that we were staying in a ‘cave!’ One drawback of the room? The shower was extremely slippery since the floor was rock. We had to throw down towels to keep from slipping. Also, waking in the middle of the night for a bathroom stroll can be offsetting. Due to the floor being uneven, it feels like you’re intoxicated. I can’t imagine how it would be if you truly were intoxicated!
We got to spend a little bit of time exploring the wonderful Secret Garden. It was a big hit with our toddler. Especially the pond. He also loved the fake bull and wishing fountain.
We ate breakfast at the restaurant. It was delicious, but pricey. My wife ordered an omelette and juice, I ordered a two egg breakfast and coffee, and we ordered toast and juice for our toddler. The bill came to $71.99. As Del ious as it was, that’s a crazy bill for breakfast.
My mother in law thought the room looked ‘old’ via FaceTime, and while understandable, that’s kind of the point. It isn’t mean to be modern. It’s meant to transport one back to a more lavish time. Some might find the bedspread and fixtures gaudy, but I felt like I was staying in a swank seventies hotel. My wife absolutely loved it as well.
For our anniversary, I bought her a slice of their famed pink cake. It was $14 a slice, but it’s hard to argue that it wasn’t worth it! I don’t like cake and even I was impressed! And the slice is humongous!
We are so looking forward to returning when we can stay for more than two nights!

We ate at the Madonna Inn Steakhouse for dinner. Ambience was great and bright, services also friendly and nice. Foods are Okay, the steaks are a bit hard and in my opinion not really seasoned well, we had to ask for A1 sauce for our steaks hehe. Bread and soup were yummy. We went to the bakery to look for some snacks or cookie, but we were disappointed, it didn’t look as yummy as we thought when we see it online. Also it didn’t showcase well. The restroom were supposed to be beautiful and romantic with pink color, but it was very smell, it was a party on the time we visited, maybe too many people using the restroom. Overall this place was ok, it wasn’t as nice as two years ago when first time I came. It needed maintenance I think. I don’t know, I could be wrong too ….. see on yourself and tell me what you think :)

A fun and quirky retro spot for a stay, a meal, or a drink. We went in for tea and slices of their enormous and delicious cakes. There is a lot of pink and kitsch in the public areas. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful.

Definitely a must do at least once. Good food, pool and very close to downtown SLO and Pismo Beach.
Nearby activities: 6 minutes to downtown SLO and 15 minutes to Pismo Beach
Safety: Yes, felt very safe
Walkability: Lots of nature to walk to on the hotel grounds but nothing. While there is a Ralphs across the street from the hotel, you can't walk to it.
Food and drinks: Good food but breakfast felt overpriced for just typical diner food.
Noteworthy details: Horse back riding on the grounds

There's nothing like it. Don't miss the pool or the two jacuzzis. If you're lucky you'll see a very talented two step couple on the dance floor at the steakhouse!

This is a destination in itself. Such a cool place to stay or just to check out for the day. Lots of walking between the buildings. There's a really fun shopping boutique upstairs. If you're planning to stay make sure to check out the wall of postcards that give a photo and description of each room!

The Madonna Inn is a fun hotel with all sorts of themed rooms. We stayed here on our 2nd anniversary in 1988, and thought it would be fun to come back on our 38th anniversary. The hotel, restaurant and cafe was just as fun as we remembered.?
Rooms: We stayed in Room 137 Caveman Room, and it was exactly what it sounds like. As soon as you walk into the room you are greeted with head to toe rock!?
Food and drinks: We had dinner in the Alex Madonna’s Gold Rush Steak House, and the food was delicious. My husband had the steak, and I had the Shrimp Alfredo. They also have the Madonna Inn Copper Cafe for a wonderful breakfast and lunch.

My husband and I stayed one night recently at the Madonna Inn while on a little coastal road trip we were taking. Great choice! We got such a kick out of the place. We stayed in the Golfer Room which was on the ground floor (Yay!) so easy to deal with bags (I don’t think they have elevators and we’re kind of old so appreciate not humping bags up a flight of stairs). Our room also had a really neat little interior patio with a gas fireplace. It was super hot while we were there so didn’t use it but it would be great on a cooler night. I read some reviews that complained about the cleanliness or datedness of the rooms but we didn’t notice any problems (but didn’t look too hard as we were primed to love the place and didn’t want to risk spoiling our delight).
For us, the highlight was the bar and restaurant building. The ornate, almost over-the-top wood carvings blew us away. Actually, we made the Madonna Inn a destination of our trip because of the wood carvings. My husband was a protégé of the artist, Alex Zeller, and had never seen his masterpiece at the Madonna Inn. It was very thrilling for us to see his beautiful work and to reminisce about hubbie’s years studying with Alex. As some of the work is unfinished due to the death of the artist, we joked that my husband should complete Alex’s oeuvre.
The bartenders were very friendly and made a good cocktail. By happenstance, we were there on a Monday night which features Lindy hop dancing so we also got to enjoy some lively music and dancing. There were some really good swing dancers and we ended up chatting with some folks who were instrumental in getting this going and really enjoyed the friendly vibe.
If you are looking for a kitschy, fun, lively place to stay, you can’t go wrong with Madonna Inn.
