August 2021 by summer w.
I am deeply disappointed in Fairview Apartments solely because of my experience moving out at the end of my lease. I lived here for two years, and never had any issues. Management is very hands off, they live on site and were generally very helpful and kind. However, I never met the landlord in person a single time. In two years. When I moved in, I was joining an existing lease and taking over someone else's spot. My roommate at the time had lived there for at least three years, and according to him, he had hopped on a previous lease that had been going for who knows how long before that. When I moved in, my roommate told me that the process for the security deposit was to pay it to the previous tenant. First red flag, and my first mistake. This was standard procedure that the landlord said to do. I felt it was odd and not very official or professional, but I was naive so I thought it was ok. Prior to my moving in, there was no official walk through, and I don't believe this unit had been professionally cleaned, maintained, or even inspected in years. Anyway, upon move out earlier this august, the management and landlord pulled what feels like a complete bait and switch. The manager did a walk through with us before move out, and said overall our unit looked good, and gave us pointers on things to pay attention to for cleaning. He also said not to worry about any holes in the wall, things like that. Also prior to moving out, our garbage disposal was clogged, I had management fix it, and they told me it was fine. When we got our deposit back, or what was left of it, we were told that locks on the front door were different, paint chipped, that we hadn't cleaned at all, that the garbage disposal was burnt out, holes in the wall, we didn't vacuum cobwebs off of the very tall ceilings, etc. it was extreme. So, my roommate inquired with the landlord about all these charges, and the way that the landlord responded is completely disgusting and unacceptable. She yelled at my roommate, and threatened her to sue and take her to court, to "go ahead" because she has more money than us. I'm sorry, that's how you speak to your tenants? What is wrong with you. The level of unprofessionalism is astounding. I am so deeply disappointed and shocked because this move out experience did not reflect what it was like to live here. Here's what I'll say about the complex. Like I said, management is pretty hands off. Free parking, and two spots was great. It's a good location, the two bed, 2.5 bath was an awesome set up, and I liked being right next to a grocery store. Also, the train is right there and the Amtrak station, and the train noise isn't bad at all. HOWEVER, one major complaint I have is with the laundry room. The machines are... still chugging, but barely. They don't wash very well, but my biggest issue is the price. In every complex I've lived in before, the most expensive cycle was 1.75. That's the cheapest cycle at Fairview. Most cycles cost $2, and it's coin op only. Super annoying, but whatever because it was convenient, and at least there was a laundry room. Also, be advised that they are deadly serious about no pets. I had a friend stop by with her dog, the dog came inside for literally 10 minutes, and we were going to head back out. management happened to see the dog come inside, knocked on my door, and (very nicely) reminded me that pets are not allowed. I thought it was extreme and kinda stupid, but they're not even allowed inside for a brief moment. So yeah. Overall, not a bad place to live but be warned about the landlord. Take documentation of EVERYTHING but be prepared to not get your full deposit back.

Lived here for two years. 2 groups of friends lived in other apartments with the same floor plan for the same amount of time. Don't expect to get anywhere close to your full deposit back. They'll charge for the carpet cleaning after telling you not to do it yourself, they'll charge two cleaning fees, and they'll say things you cleaned were not clean enough. The management will be very hands off unless you're making a bunch of noise (the reason for higher than 1 star). Three onsite managers in two years with the most recent one being a very intimidating and serious fellow that likes to think he knows how to be a man and properly dispose of furniture. The maintenance guy was chill. Oh yeah the leaky roof above our friend's apt. didn't get fixed until the end of the next summer. Was threatened with a communal apartment complex cost of plumbing repairs after the sewer backed up (thankfully not beyond the bathtubs). I was told by the owner that something similar happened a year or two before we moved in but they had to replace a lot of carpet, cabinets, etc on the bottom floor between A and E. No pets. Even when you agree to paying a deposit on a support animal you'll have trouble getting that back. Rent went up every year we were aware of what the price was to the point that you're better off renting a house somewhere closer to campus that actually has a dishwasher, yard, and garage.TLDR: Mgmt isn't the best (far from worst) but it's a good place to live if you're low maintenance, have a lot of money, and don't want to look for a better place to live pricewise. Plenty of parking. Train behind you isn't too bad either.
